So, how come Donald wants to gut NATO. You know, NATO, the Allied army that has kept the Russian tanks from running over Germany, France, Italy, England, Spain since 1949?
What could possibly cause Donald to want to get rid of NATO?
I can't quite figure out why Donald hates NATO.
Somebody quick help me out on this one.

(2,807 posts)I just don't understand who would gain by weakening NATO.

(62 posts)How you define gain. Americans and Russians would gain. One financially and one territorially. We should continue to back NATO. The Eastern European situation SCREAMS Rhineland situation pre-WW2. If NATO didn't exist, hell if America left NATO, Russia would have no issue "restoring" to its Cold War influence.

It seems to be very similar to the objections of participating in any U-N Peacekeeping missions. The "who's-in-charge" question has always been a sticky wicket for American conservative lawmakers who felt that unless we were HEAD HONCHOS IN CHARGE, then our ALMIGHTY POWER was being eroded.
This is what false pride will get ya.
"Stronger Together" applies to more than just elections, huh?

That is absolutely correct.

(62 posts)I feel actions speak louder then words. The SecDef spoke with NATO not to long ago and his basic message was that NATO isn't going anywhere. However he did say that he is tired of American Forces putting more worth in Europe's defense then the European Nations and they need to carry their own weight.

Older link - but it doesn't change history:

The principle of collective defence is enshrined in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty.
NATO invoked Article 5 for the first time in its history after the 9/11 terrorist attacks against the United States.
NATO has taken collective defence measures on several occasions, for instance in response to the situation in Syria and in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine crisis.
NATO has standing forces on active duty that contribute to the Alliances collective defence efforts on a permanent basis.
More recently - Marco Rubio (a Republican so he's fair game to attack) shoved his stupid smug nose where it didn't belong and tried to invoke it after the Paris attacks.
In light of the calls for reciprocity with Visas for US travelers to the EU - I'd suggest Tillerson tread carefully here. He doesn't understand the quality and extent of hatred for Russian in EU countries right now. He needs to shut up - he's not qualified for the job and is just out for himself and Exxon profits.

(62 posts)But if you think the minimum amount of support those countries put into Afghanistan is equal to the amount we put into European defense your crazy my friend.
Rubio is of course a hot head (in a negative way) 😂

(2,807 posts)And that a weakened NATO would really only benefit, well, Russia.
I mean I'm just spit balling here.
If NATO dissolved America, Germany, Britain, Russia, and maybe Canada stand to gain a level of benefit provided Russia doesn't attempt to steam roll Europe as a whole.
Militarily USA, Britain, and Canada (possibly Germany and to a less extinct France) will also be tied to one another.

This is a pretty big proviso, and I would consider it a major probability should NATO dissolve, considering it's already underway.

(62 posts)I agree they attempted. Have you been there sense all this has been taking place? I have and Russia isn't there. Not any more.
They may be there in proxy but not actually. They can't win that by proxy. I don't see us backing from that.

(10,252 posts)1. It would please his Russian masters to weaken NATO, and in doing so put money in his pocket somehow
2. He hates spending money on anyone but himself. If we stopped putting money into NATO, we could give more tax cuts to the rich.

(2,807 posts)That it's kinda like he's helping Russia out. That's he's actually helping add to Russian influence in Europe.
Averagegrunt
(62 posts)It may involuntarily. It most certainly would give Russia more influence but it would save several countries a lot of money.
It's a bad idea to back out of or dissolve NATO. It won't happen.

(2,807 posts)I mean, isn't there some kind of hubbub, a bit of a kerfuffle, about Donald and Russia?? Seems I heard something about Trump/Russia on my TeeVee yesterday. Maybe people ought to know about how Trump/NATO looks in regard to Trump/Russia.
And how even a simpleton like me can connect the dots.

Putin seeks hegemony over Western Europe and a free hand to bully and or invade and take over any country he wants.
NATO restricts him so he will use his puppet president Trump to weaken and unravel it.
