Missouri Republican tries to block minimum wage hike because pay ‘wasn’t meant to be a living wage’

http://www.rawstory.com/2017/03/missouri-republican-tries-to-block-minimum-wage-hike-because-pay-wasnt-meant-to-be-a-living-wage/

A Missouri Republican introduced legislation that would stop Kansas City from enacting a higher minimum wage — because he said workers weren’t meant to live on those wages.

Rep. Dan Shaul (R-Jefferson City) wants the statehouse to quickly pass his bill that would prohibit cities and counties from paying a higher minimum wage than what is set by state law, reported the Kansas City Star.

The bill contains an emergency clause that would allow it to go into effect as soon as the governor signs it, and the newspaper reported Shaul’s bill is moving quickly through the legislative process.

“The minimum wage wasn’t meant to be a living wage,” Shaul told the Star. “I’m all for family sustainable wages, and I certainly don’t want a family to have to work two or three jobs to get by. But grocery store baggers and fast food work isn’t where you should be working to sustain your family.”

Republicans dont like working people, and yet millions of working people vote for them.

Sounds stupid, but true.

That Republican is right. Grocery baggers and fast food work isn't meant to sustain a family. But sadly in some places the only job that some folk can get are those kind of jobs.

Minimum wage is one way of fixing it. Another way is through a social welfare system - families have a minimum income, one person in the family works for a less than sustainable wage, and the government tops up the family income with a "family allowance". Other allowances like Section 8 if fully funded could help.

However where that Republican is wrong is that there are poor families who need help... now. Not later when the breadwinner has worked through some retraining program and got a better job. Americans have so much of an individualistic attitude, and Republicans I find are more on the extreme end. People from more collective cultures tend to support social programs.

From the article: “We need to work to bring in high paying jobs into the state,” he said. “Raising the minimum wage is only going to drive businesses out of the city of St. Louis.” (unquote)

How does this sentence make any sense at all? Companies that pay higher wages won't move to a city where the minimum wage is $10? Just what does he think higher paying jobs mean? $9 an hour?

In my city, there is one factory that is almost always hiring (I imagine it is hard work. I know one person who has been there a long time). Almost every store and fast food place is hiring. So yeah, if you want a local job to support your family, that is where it is at.

I'm sure the minimum wage was not initially intended to be a living wage. However, at the time it was implemented there were not vast numbers of people who were dependent upon it as their only wages. Sure, it was for kids and housewives who wanted to get out of the house when their husbands would allow them.

That has all changed now though. The GOP, has changed too. It is much, much worse.

Any person working 40 hours a week, is doing what to stay alive? ... Working 40 hours a week! WTF! These billionaire lovers really really resent people who work for a living.

Isn't that what the GOP preaches? Isn't that more restrictive and unnecessary regulation?

Just how does this work with that GOP Mantra?
