Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe leading contenders for the 2020 Democratic Presidential nomination based on high
name recognition, ability to energize the progressive Democratic base and win the November General Election are going to be Elizabeth Warren-MA and Martin OMalley-MD. The Democratic party establishment base headed by fellow Marylander Tom Perez-current DNC chair will in 2020 coalesce around Martin OMalley. Hillary Clinton,John Kerry, and Al Gore will be portrayed as losers, Losing a winnable Presidential race against a controversial Republican opponent Bush43 and Trump. Bernie Sanders is going to be in his late 70's. OMalley is the most experienced candidate for President, former Mayor of Baltimore-1999 to 2007, former Governor of Maryland-2007 to 2015. OMalley also ran for President in 2016, Losing in the Democratic primary to Hillary Clinton who was the favored by the establishment wing of the Democratic Party and Bernie Sanders who was favored by the progressive base of the Democratic party. OMalley could then appoint Former HUD Secretary Julian Castro-TX as his Vice Presidential runningmate. Omalley/Castro ticket could carry the Clinton 2016 states 232ev plus pick up AZ,FL,and NC-287ev or pick up PA,MI,and WI-278ev.

(33,556 posts)I googled her though, and see she's California's new Senator.
I do know who Al Franken is. He's out in front of the Senate, highly intelligent, tough, honest and fair, as fair as one can be under these awful circumstances.
After Obama, I'm not afraid to believe that a newcomer of whom I've not heard might be great, but right now, I'm hoping for a wide primary with excellent candidates, and I'm hoping Al Franken is one of them.

(550 posts)Sometimes a candidate just doesn't do well on a national stage.
How could HRC, Gore, and Kerry be thrown overboard as 'losers', and OMalley presumed a contender, after his primary performance?
Makes no sense.

(8,617 posts)electoral college vote to Trump in 2016, and Bush43 in 2000 and 2004. We can legitimately argue that the state Governors in FL-Scott,MI-Snyder,and WI-Walker rigged the election for Trump in 2016, OH-Taft and FL-Jeb Bush rigged the election for Bush43 in 2000 and 2004. Democratic Party establishment is not going to recycle past nominees for President.
Martin OMALLEY lost because he did not energize the progressive base of the Democratic party like Obama did in 2008 when running against HRC, and Sanders did in 2016 against HRC. HRC and Sanders had much higher name recognition and endorsements than OMALLEY.
The advantage OMALLEY has is potential top tier Democratic candidates for the 2020 Presidential election ie Booker-NJ,Brown-OH,Cuomo-NY,Franken-MN,Gillibrand-NY,Harris-CA,Hickenlooper-CO,Inslee-WA,Kaine-VA and McAullife-VA have said no to a 2020 Democratic Presidential run.
The remaining top tier candidate in 2020 besides OMALLEY and Warren is Julian Castro-TX.
Julian Castro-TX would be an excellent VP runningmate to either OMALLEY or Warren.

(550 posts)...to tell me OMalley's biggest selling point is the better candidates have already decided to sit the race out?
I will bet any takers a hundred gazillion dollars that OMalley will never be the nominee. I don't even know anything about him or his policies...which is precisely why I can make such a prediction, as his last run made that small an impression.

(8,617 posts)Kander-MO political experience is 2 terms as MO state Representative 2008-2012, 1 term as MO Secretary of State 2012-2016, He was the Democratic nominee for US Senate in MO in 2016 losing to Republican incumbent Roy Blunt by a narrow 3 percent margin outperforming Clinton who lost MO by a 19 percent margin.
If Kander were to be the 2020 Democratic Presidential nominee, he would need to appoint an experienced United States Senator as his runningmate.
former 3term US Senator Russ Feingold-WI.

I agree that Kander won't be the Democratic nominee in 2020.
But for the record, nobody would have guessed in November 2000 that the next president we elected would be a state senator who just got blown out in a Democratic primary for a House seat.

(8,617 posts)nomination for President in 2020.
Had Kander won the 2016 MO US Senate Race and the Democratic nominee for MO Governor won in 2016, Kander would be the top tier Democratic candidate for President in 2020.
Abraham Lincoln is the only POTUS that was elected POTUS right after losing a contested US Senate Race in IL.
Barack Obama gave the DNC keynote address in 2004 right before he became US Senator.
Julian Castro of Texas gave the DNC keynote address in 2012.
