The incredible Coral Sea wilderness, which stretches for roughly 1,400 miles over an area of roughly 133,00 square miles, has finally succumbed to bleaching.

We do need a fake news alert button. Confirmation bias isn't just for Republicans, sadly.

(6,905 posts)The reef is not a single living organism. It can't have a moment of death unless you count the exact time when the population of living things there goes completely to zero, and if that should happen some day, the reef will have been effectively dead for many years anyway.

(80,708 posts)Hyperbolic bullshit in the cause of furthering environmental awareness does NOT create new environmentalists; rather, it causes people to be more likely to consider all environmental warnings bullshit.
I worked with the Rainforest Action Network in the 80s-- I remember one piece of breathless nonsense I would hear repeated as gospel "scientific" truth; "Planet Earth will not be able to sustain any life more complex than a cockroach, by the year 2000"
Obviously that was not the case, was it, fellow cockroaches?
A similar scenario took place several years ago when people said the Himalayan Snowpack would be gone in a decade, or so.
The problem with this 'approach' is, it does not cause people to go "OH MY FUCKING GOD I BETTER DO SOMETHING RIGHT NOW" which, I presume, is the intent- rather, it makes them throw up their hands and even worse, when they discover they were lied to, to not take any environmental warnings seriously-- like, yes, rainforest depletion and global climate change ARE real problems that deserve serious attention.
Same with ocean acidification and warming.

Exageration and hyperbole are not acceptable forms of news.
BeckyDem
(8,361 posts)of. Considering it is DYING is why they did the tongue and cheek story to get people concerned and we now have a president who will help finish it off.
Dr Hobbitstein
(6,568 posts)Lying is not acceptable for news. We can't complain about a President who lies and then turn around a lie when it suits our purposes...
Lying is wrong. Fake news is wrong. Supporting liars and fake news is a Republican tactic, not a Democratic one.
BeckyDem
(8,361 posts)by Outside Magazine. I do not care if this thread is deleted, I didn't put it up. The title is exaggerated because they wanted attention to the problem.
Dr Hobbitstein
(6,568 posts)And you are supporting it.

(8,361 posts)My remarks to the OP stand. Greed caused this. RIP
If you think anything will change with Trump in charge, good for you. I do not.
If you want this deleted have at it, I didn't post it. The reason this story was presented as it was by Outside Magazine was to bring notice to the fact the the issue doesn't have enough attention to change the problem. You don't have to agree with their tactic but it changes nothing about the fact it is dying, although not dead.
If you are so pressed for accuracy then ask the OP to add, Pending, since Trump will do nothing to prevent the state its in today.
Dr Hobbitstein
(6,568 posts)The article here is NOT about Outside Magazine. Matter of fact, they get one mention at the bottom. The article is claiming that scientists have officially declared it dead. This is NOT true. You keep supporting the OP (which is a FUCKING LIE), hence you are supporting a lie.
The article is NOT tongue in cheek, and has nothing to do with the Outside article. It is fake news. How do you not get that? And why are you doubling down on supporting a FUCKING LIE?
