A smartphone is probably the most important piece of equipment a person can have, as it can serve as a phone line, communication/text/IM device and internet/email/news access all in one if a person can't afford separate broadband and phone service fees monthly.

It makes financial sense also to pay a large amount outright for a moderately good phone as those "free" phones companies give you for signing a contract come with higher monthly bills as you pay off the "free" phone.

I'm very partial to Virgin mobile. I just bought a new iPhone SE for $179 on sale, and unlimited talk/text/5GB data is $35/mo - $30 if you're able to register a credit card for auto-pay. In the past I couldn't handle the $80-90/mo AT&T was charging me.

They have iPhone 5s for $99 as well.
