I live in a neighboring district. I still wanted to be a "good parent." Good parents reinforce and reward GOOD behavior, in the same way that good parents DO NOT reinforce OR reward BAD behavior.
I've also found that, at least with our fellow Dems, IF YOU GAVE MONEY TO THEIR CAMPAIGNS, seems to me you have a right to weigh in, too. After all, you're an underwriter of their campaigns, and your donation helped them win or keep that Senate/House job. As their financier, you do own a piece of them. I like to make my money talk (you damn well better hear me, Heidi Heitkamp!).
Speaking of whom, I remember after the Newtown massacre when all those little six-year-olds were mowed down in their school, none other than Heidi Heitkamp was on "Good Morning America" asserting that "OH NO! I'm not going to do ANYTHING about assault rifles!"
Well, I don't give a rat's patootie whether they're bigtime into hunting in her state (North Dakota). And I called her office to object. Yeah, I'm from California. I'm not her constituent. I've never been to North Dakota. But by Jove I GAVE MONEY to her campaign when she was first running for the Senate. I made myself a contributor to support getting another Democrat into the Senate. And she won! And I was glad. But unfortunately she winds up being kind of a DINO, and I thought, AS HER FINANCIAL BENEFACTOR, that I ought to let her know (or, more accurately, one of her staffers).
So I called her office. I introduced myself as NOT a constituent, BUT a campaign donor. Yes, I know I don't live in North Dakota. But I helped FUND HER CAMPAIGN to win that Senate seat, and I believe I'm thereby entitled to demand something for my money. And I said so. Nicely, of course, and very polite. "Yes, I know I'm not a North Dakotan, I'm from California. But she was VERY happy to take MY CALIFORNIA MONEY when she was running for the Senate the first time. So, as her campaign donor, I believe I have the right to weigh in." And with that, I briefly expressed my displeasure with what she'd said on "Good Morning America" earlier that morning. Nicely, of course, and very polite. And I politely added - "I'm afraid I may have to stop supporting her campaign from here on, if that continues to be her position."
And again, I'm FULLY aware of the "that woman's not a constituent..." thing. But then perhaps they also understand that "that woman's no longer a campaign donor, either." Perhaps she can get along without any more donations from me, if she can't represent my concerns. I can certainly find other campaigns to support with the money I don't give to hers.
