Is there something wrong with how our government is structured when

A party can win the Whitehouse by 3 million votes, and the Senate by 6 million votes, but then effectively hold zero power and be shut out of even low level positions of government.
The framers never expected the moral fiber of our politicians to unravel this much (how could they when a woman showing her ankle was unchaste in that time), nor did they expect the intellect and basic civility of those elected could diminish to the point we are at. The electoral college for instance was designed because they knew large swaths of humans will always be ignorant, but that should not affect the ideal of democratic elections. But we now see the electoral college staffed with the ignorant dirtfarmers that it was designed to defend against.

I fear for the sustainability of a country that can hold an election and the minority can sweep through every single corner of government and essentially turn the country into something not recognizable in idealogy to the tones and American ideals that previous administrations have set.

Considering the compromises that were required so that the many states would agree to a Federal structure, this has always been the situation.

But it was only after passage of the CRA that the GOP became the party of segregation and discrimination that the GOP gained a lock on the South and West. And after Clinton's win, the GOP became the party of obstruction.

Not only was everything you said right on the money, but the minority party does it with a total the vengeance. The solution is obvious, but we have to stay committed to it.
