Trumps Dictator Chic
I wrote a book about autocrats design tastes. The U.S. president would fit right in.

As it turned out, this familiar yet unfamiliar apartmenta familiar style to me by then, but in an unlikely locationbelonged to Donald Trump, who by then was running for president. This was the penthouse of the potential leader of the free world. The design work, I have since learned, was started by the late Angelo Donghia, a decorator better known for a chic Manhattan look. But the substantive current design had been done by one Henry Conversano, who designed extensivelyand perhaps unsurprisinglyfor casinos. No matter how you looked at it, the main thing this apartment said was, I am tremendously rich and unthinkably powerful. This was the visual language of public, not private, space. It was the language of the Eastern European and Middle Eastern nouveau riche.

(1,606 posts)Just the most over-the-top, gauche, gilded grotesque excessive ostentatious displays of wealth "Look at how super duper rich and great I am, all this gold and crystals and shiny uncomfortably mismatched ornate fancy crap crammed in here" - Like a cartoonish Dictator. It's just surreal.
It reminds me of an Evil Chaebol family's home in a high budget Korean drama. (The more nutbaggy and crazy the display, the more EVIL and BAAAD they must be lol) Complete the look with some intense KDrama background music... all that's left is for a protagonist who was fucked over by the Evil Family in his childhood to climb to power and topple the Bad Guys! LOL (I wish)

(80,708 posts)you're just not like other people. You're surrounded by an incredible bubble. You don't exist in the same universe, basically.
With Jackson you had someone likely with some severe emotional issues (to put it mildly) but probably, fundamentally, kind-hearted and decent.
Throw someone pathologically nasty into that existence and you get... something worse.

(56,081 posts)There are plenty of "millionaires next door" who live life as normally as they can, who make an effort to stay grounded. Maybe a few billionaires, too -- buffett has a modest house, e.g.
Donnie quite deliberately choose to overindulge on conspicuous consumption, he very much chose to live in an illusion of his own creation.

I thought at the time it sorta made sense ( won't mention what kind of house I was thinking of)

(12,448 posts)He may be ultra rich, but money can't buy a thing called class. I mean that word in its best sense: an innate sense of decorum, of grace, of style. An appreciation of beauty, of kindness. A desire and willingness to help those less fortunate knowing that you, too, could be there.
Dump is the opposite: a clumsy, gaudy carnival barker, a bloviating bullying thug.
