In 2014 I Would Have Had To Decide On Death Or Bankruptcy & Homelessness/W No Insurance..
It crossed my mind when my wife told me that I would have to have my left foot amputated in March 2014. I have told my story before. I was admitted to the hospital with sepsis syndrome being infected with MSSA staph. My left foot was dying at the time and my right leg was infected.
The end result was 4 surgeries, 3 MRIs, 90 days of intravenous antibiotics, 2 pic line, 14 days in the hospital 1st time, 4 days in the hospital second time, 3 weeks in a rehab center, vacuum wound pack for 90 days, in home nursing care, 9 months in wheel chair, 60 days of specialist wound care on my stump, and in the end 3 prosthesis at $10,000 each plus Hangar appointments and 15 surgeon appointments et al.
The bill was at least $250,000 and probably more. Thanks To Medicare and good insurance, today I am back to pretty good health and mobile thanks to my artificial leg.
Believe me I wondered as I lay in the hospital what would have if there was no insurance. With no insurance a person would have to decide if they should really die rather than be homeless. It would be really hard if that meant your kids and wife would be destitute.
Now I had no children, but I had a spouse who was a real hero in my care. I essentially had no legs to walk on for 90 days.
BTW. The following year my wife had a hip replacement and recently was diagnosed with a heart valve defect that will need replacing eventually. Right now a lot of medication is working. We are both on a lot of meds.
