let's just take a moment to appreciate just how impressively epic this fail is

republicans control the white house and both houses of congress.

they essentially campaigned on repeal of obamacare for eight solid years and claimed their victory was a mandate to do just that.

obamacare includes some taxes (on high earners), so repeal by definition includes a tax cut.

and they're in a new president's first 100 days, historically the ideal time for passing new legislation.

... and they couldn't even get it though the house, where democrats have effectively zero power, not even the filibuster power we have in the senate.

this is truly an impressively epic demonstration of incompetence, not only on donnie's part, but also on ryan and mcconnel and the entire republican (non-)leadership.

and they'll continue to rail against it and find ways to undermine it.

eventually, they'll be able to say it's bad (because they ruined it) and swelling the deficit (because the under-funded it) and then they'll take another shot at it. might take a few years. hopefully they're out of power by then....

The only improvements that can be made to Obamacare are liberal (prescription drug negotiation, public option). Anything else will make it worse for everyone. Trump and Ryan both deserve to go down in flames. Republicans showed their true colors with this healthcare bill, though it should be called a health destruction bill--there's very little care about it. Immediately after the election, Ryan was absolutely gleeful about taking away people's rights (and I consider decent healthcare a right), punishing older people by reducing Social Security, and helping to kill poor people by doing away with Medicaid. Republican politicians care only about themselves and kowtowing to the rich. I am sick of their lack of even a semblance of moral behavior. They're the family values party as much as I'm the next president--NOT!

Find out everything we can about European, Canadian, Austrailian comprehensive healthcare. So we can begin to tell our voting family and friends how a Medicare for All comprehensive healthcare system that provides healthcare from cradle to elderly nursing home would actually be cheaper and easier to administer and serve people. Take for-profit insurance companies completely out of the picture. A system paid with payroll taxes that would certainly be far cheaper than paying annual premiums to an insurance company.

Ask your friends and neighbors "Why can't we have a healthcare system like they have in Europe, Austrailia and Canada?"

I think McConnell knew that repealing the ACA would cause chaos and hurt Republican Senators in purple states if it passed. If it failed, Senate republicans in red states risked being primaried. Ryan knew that the House had to push to repeal immediately or they would all get branded as RINOs (even more than they are already) by the rabid far right that comes out and votes in the House midterms. So, they were in a no win situation. The House had to push repeal and the Senate Republicans wanted no part of having to vote on the thing either way. The solution, while not painless, was to put something forward that wouldn't pass the House. And it was supposedly brought down by the ultra conservative "Freedom Caucus". But honestly, can we think of a time ever when those people didn't ultimately fall in line? Especially on something that was this important? That's why I think it was orchestrated to begin with. But it's just a theory, of course.

Or at least, if they did indeed kill it on purpose, they're idiots and it's still an epic fail.

I've been saying ever since the election that they had a pretty simple path to a win here. Just repeal Obamacare and replace it with donniecare, which is surprisingly similar, but just different enough that fox news can insist it's completely and utterly not exactly the same thing.

Maybe change the "mandate or penalty" to a mathematically equivalent "rebate or tax". Then make the taxes more regressive. Screw the poor and smoke and mirrors, the usual republican crap.

The fact that they couldn't pass anything at all is snatching defeat from the jaws of victory

I don't think they actually discussed making the bail fail, at least not among the legislative chamber, maybe at the top (with Ryan, McConnell). Instead what happened was that an opportunity, as it were, was seen where the Republicans wouldn't have to own up to having any part with health care. They can now allow Obamacare premiums to rise because of its faults (needs prescription drug price renegotiation, which will never make it out of committee, needs a public federal level option).

Let Obamacare get worse for people and less useful because of skyrocketing premiums, and then 2-4 years later they can run on repealing it again.

Please! Let's don't even think of going down that path.

The GOP voted how many times to defund the ACA when Obama was POTUS? Now when it won't be vetoed they chicken out because the ACA, although not very good, has insured that millions have health coverage who didn't before. And women get to be treated like humans. And folks with cancer or genetic disabilities get treated, too.

People have woken up to what GOP healthcare is about. It's healthcare is only for those who can afford it.

That's why this thing crashed and burned.

106. i don't think this will play quite like roe v. wade. that's a supreme court issue.

that's worked great for them because they can insist they need a republican president and a republican senate and time it with the right retirements until they get a supreme court that's right-wing enough to overturn roe v. wade. it's the gift that keeps on giving for them because it takes forever to accomplish.

obamacare repeal, on the other hand, is a legislative issue. they've got all the ingredients in place now. if they can't do it now, controlling the white house and both houses of congress, then why should voters keep giving them more chances. i know, i know, these are republicans we're talking about, but still.

i think it will play out more like medicare and social security. republicans hate it and would love to kill it, but they can't, too many of their own republican constituents depend on it, so they'll look for ways to undermine it, like they want to piratize social security.

least the House, healthcare and the country will be in grave danger, and we really can't lay back. There is no doubt in my mind the republicans are still going to try and do everything to damage the ACA, and that don't need to repeal it to do that.

worth celebrating a bit....

besides, this is not just any old battle.

this is has been their signature issue for 8 years. they have enough republicans to pass it with zero democratic votes, and they still couldn't figure it out.

epic.

To push their plan through within 2 months. Not only does it have the appearance of a rush job, it is a rush job. Not well thought out. They didn't do squat while they had 8 years to come up with something, but that was well known. It is adding insult to injury for a lot of small r Republicans to then slap something together like this.

But also, for their own benefit, it should have been worked at for a bit longer to convince the tea baggers in their peer group. Whittle down the benefits, and add more tax breaks for CEOs, or just throw some pork into a few of the more stubborn Senators. Seriously whats the rush? I thought they believed Obamacare would implode on itself anyways.

Oh well, coulda should woulda...

it's been said that a good lawyer never asks a witness a question at trial that he doesn't already know the answer to.

similarly, they should have never brought this bill up if they didn't know it (or something similar) would pass.

to do otherwise is to ask for a self-inflicted wound, and that's what they got.

With all the news lately, more people are starting to understand what the ACA does (like all health care, it's complicated!) and its approval is higher than ever. They also now know what will happen if it's taken away.
Fix it, don't nix it.
