I understand that people are relieved that the ACA has survived, for now, and I feel that way, too, but it's a serious matter. The over the top gloating trivializes the very real fight we are in, IMO. I believe that Obama is setting a good example for behavior in light of this short term "victory" with an eye toward the long game, winning the actual war.

Gloating only riles up the base, and comes round to bite us in the ass. We are about to deal w tax cuts for the rich as we pay for a stupid, pointless wall that no one wants. Debt we will carry on the backs of the working class for decades. It will be used to cut important programs, and education for future generations. Plus, interest rates are going up fast, and it will be harder to pay the interest on the growing debt.
This time the Repubs will be united, so it will be a harder fight.

Every single one of us who marched, called our Congresspeople, went to Indivisible meetings, phone banked, and contributed to this victory yesterday should celebrate. That doesn't mean we'll lose sight of the challenges before us. Believe it or not, many of us here have brains capable of multi-tasking.

(13,390 posts)I don't find Glee here. Relief but not joy. While the survival of healthcare coverage in a system that does not prioritize care and delivery is currently essential to saving lives and helping people be healthy, it is not just imperfect. There are some flaws that I think Democrats will work to fix if given the chance so that it will gain more enthusiastic support.
We're still on the defensive.

(128,726 posts)I have been gloating my ass off since yesterday. I love it. I am also wallowing in Schadenfreude. Of course we need to fight tooth and nail to be sure they don't sabotage the ACA, but the final crashing and burning of the GOPers' seven-year attempt to repeal it is one of the most gloatworthy things I've ever seen. So please take your concern elsewhere and let us enjoy our glorious gloat.

(164,756 posts)who have become "activists" (some literally daily) in their localities - either at protest marches, sit-ins, or town halls, as well as corresponding with their representatives (via phone, email, snail mail). Just today, there were many protestors here in Philly who counter-protested a pro-Drumpf march, both at a rally point across from Independence Hall, and later along what ended up being a truncated parade route.
I think what you call "gloating" is more of a collective "cheer" for a good outcome (for now) thanks to all the dedicated people who have actually showed us that what they (we) have done CAN make a difference. And notably it was mentioned here on the Philly news that several swing-district Rs in PA & Jersey were slated to vote "no", apparently due to the constituents demanding that they not have people lose coverage, especially Medicaid (vs the teabaggers who wanted the bill to literally eliminate the ACA completely and would vote no because it didn't).
So give the warriors their due -

(5,272 posts)It is wayyy too optimistic to be grave-dancing at this point, but it is certainly worthwhile to tie this around Trump, Ryan, and the GOP's neck and to make it their failure due to intellectual sloth, laziness, incompetence, greed, and lack of decency. It's important that they are plastered with this, since it is such a perfect symbol of all of those faults.

(4,198 posts)When we do this we come across no better than the other side which says things like "our number 1 goal is to make sure president Obama fails."
Our number one response should be to say "Americans dodged a bullet and our goal is to fix the things that arent so great about Obamacare (for example that many Americans are still not covered).
Obamacare does indeed have some problems that will threaten its long term and even intermediate term viability. But they can be fixed.
When the '18 elections roll around and with Americans increasingly appreciating its benefits Dems will be in a very good position to run on strengthening and fixing it or even a move to replace it with single payer.
This is where we need to be focusing. Gloating takes away from where the focus should be: on the things i mention in the prior paragraph.

(24,929 posts)but, given the dire circumstances we are in, the fact that Republicans couldn't ram this POS bill on a party-line vote despite having a majority in Congress and a President of their own party in the WH, is pretty significant. I expect that they might regroup and try again but I don't see how they pull it off since their only recourse- to make it worse for the sake of the "Freedom Caucus"- will scare off the moderates it will need in the Senate (and wasn't even able to attract in in the House).
