Holy crap, one of the witnesses, Clinton Watts, is talking about

how Trump and his minions repeated the Russians' false information during and after the campaign. And busting on the mainstream media for not fact-checking the crap the Russians plant in social media.

in their elections.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/samuel-ramani/why-russia-is-interfering_b_12801892.html

NPR the other day described how Russia has been meddling in French politics for some time.

Unless we tie Trump, or some close aides, with conspiring directly with Russia to sway the election to Trump, we have nothing. I'm hopeful something will turn up in the hearings, or more likely in investigations by the media.

But I'm not counting on it like I did waking up in the middle of the night checking on whether they locked bush or cheney up during the Fitzmas investigations.

The group behind the hacks is known as Fancy Bear, or APT 28, or Tsar Team, or a dozen other names that have been given to them over the years by cybersecurity researchers. Despite being one of the most reported-on groups of hackers active on the internet today, there is very little researchers can say with absolute certainty. No one knows, for instance, how many hackers are working regularly within Fancy Bear, or how they organize their hacking squads. They don’t know if they are based in one city or scattered in various locations across Russia. They don’t even know what they call themselves.

The group is, according to a White House statement last week, receiving their orders from the highest echelons of the Russian government and their actions “are intended to interfere with the US election process.”

Someone in the group maybe went rogue or set up private shop for hire, but the malware is no longer a signature of the state hackers, it is available online to any hacker.

that Trump will go down, sooner or later, and they don't want to be infested with his cooties. Also, Senators don't have to run for re-election every two years so the GOPers on the committee will probably be less influenced by the Trumpistas in their states. The chairman, Burr, was just re-elected, and I've read that he won't be running again when his term expires in 2022, so he's essentially immune from that kind of pressure. He might have also figured out that he has a chance to be the hero, kind of like Howard Baker in the Watergate hearings.

Russia versus democracies is easy to get behind for everyone. FBI investigating criminal activity of the Republican administration is a bit more to swallow. One is going after collusion, the other is going after an external attack.
