Howard Dean tells Dems to filibuster Gorsuch or hang it up: Youll never raise money again

enate Democrats have floated the idea of filibustering President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court Justice nominee, Neil Gorsuch. On Thursday, West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin (D) announced that he intends to vote in favor of confirming Gorsuch.

“An announcement by a Democrat — I know he’s one of the more moderate or conservative Democrats — but an announcement by a Democrat Joe Manchin that’s going to vote for this confirmation. What does this do, Howard Dean, to the question of a filibuster on the Democratic side?” MSNBC host Steve Kornacki asked former Vermont Gov. and DNC chair, Howard Dean.

“Nothing. That’s baked in,” Dean replied, noting that two or three Democrats will likely vote to confirm Gorsuch.

Howard Dean is right.

After the last eight years, and the republicans refusing to afford Garland a hearing, any Democrat who votes for Gorsuch, should hang it up.

First of all, any argument that blocking the nomination of Gorsuch will hurt the Democrats is bullshit. The Democrats cannot be hurt any worse than what has happened. In fact by opposing this nomination is actually a loud message to the republicans that the Democrats are NOT going to be pushed around anymore, and what they did to Garland, is NOT acceptable.

Yes, the republicans can exercise the nuclear option. Let them. Payback is gonna be a bitch, but when it comes, there won't any mercy. The changing demographics, and the draconian republican agenda is going to come back to haunt them. It may take four years, or ten years, but it is going to happen.

can start a letter writing and phone call campaign to help persuade her to flip back to supporting Gorsuch....

You know, for the sake of the party. Screw women's and minority rights. I mean my gawd, some life long Republican just may find out that Democrats can't be pushed around and may get extra mad and this time really vote Republican. Really pull the handle down harder this time for Republicans.

And what is curious?

Taking backhanded swipes at DU members who understand McCaskill's position and try to explain it to you is silly and divisive. And calling elected Democrats feeble simply because Bernie did it is inexcusable on a Democratic board.

Schumer has the 41 votes without McCaskill. She does not need to put herself in jeopardy of losing her seat. We need her in our caucus, even when she cannot vote with us. She will caucus with us and vote with us most of the time. That is important.

I think you need to learn how politics work.

And remember who Howard Dean is. When he dropped out of the primaries, he became the head of the DNC. He started the fifty-state strategy. He helped put some of those blue dog Democrats whom you disrespect into office. Dean knew that moderate and conservative Democrats were the only kind of people who could be elected in some parts of the country. Because of Dean, and those Democrats who do not pass your purity tests, President Obama was able to get the ACA passed, and do some of the other good things he did early in his Presidency. Do you even know anything about Dean's history? He would have snorted at your purity tests.

After we lost during the midterms, we could not even get a hearing for Garland. Do you like your purity so much that you are willing to lose again in 2018?

I agree with Dean most of the time. But remember: Dean was and is a pragmatic politician when he needs to be. When you invoke his name, you make me laugh.

Then, there's a primary where the voters choose who they want to represent them. What we don't need are elites who think they know best telling people in states like Missouri or West Virginia what is best for them.

If we did not have a Democrat in that seat, even a moderate or conservative Democrat, there would have been no chance of that. Keep that in mind when you scold us.

I just sent a donation today (after incessant appeals 4 and 5 times a day), and I want to know that my money is being used for things I support. I hope that our elected Democrats are listening to the grass-roots groups that have sprung up and so far have enormous staying power because we will remember who stood with us and who didn't when election day rolls around again. Mitch McConnell is not to be trusted. The filibuster is history, and when Democrats are once again in charge of the Senate, majority vote will be handy. Republicans may someday rue getting rid of the filibuster! Gorsuch does not belong on the Supreme Court where he can vote to favor corporations and the wealthy many years into the future.
