Iowa politician says even dead fetuses should be carried to term

An Iowa state representative has caused a furor online by asserting that women who miscarry after 20 weeks of pregnancy should have to carry their fetuses to term.

Shannon Lundgren’s comments came during a hearing this week on Senate File 471, which would pave the way for a state ban on abortions after the 20-week mark. The Iowa House of Representatives’ Human Resources Committee approved the legislation after a “fetal heartbeat bill” that would have banned abortion any time after a heartbeat is detected—as early as six weeks of pregnancy—was scrapped. The legislation is now under consideration by the Iowa House, and if it becomes law, Iowa would be the 18th state to ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Lundgren, the manager of Senate File 471, represents rural Dubuque and ran for office on an anti-abortion platform. She was asked by state Representative John Forbes if, under the proposal, his daughter, who is 20 weeks pregnant, would have to carry her child to term even if a doctor told her there was no longer a heartbeat. “Is that good medicine?” asked Forbes.

“This bill wasn’t written for the intent to protect or govern on the side of the woman. It was written to save babies’ lives, giving the choice and being the voice of those babies...that don’t have one,” replied Lundgren. “I understand what you’re saying—this fetus, this baby, is not alive. I would concur that in that instance, if your daughter’s life is not in danger, that yes, she would have to carry that baby.”

Desperate to have kids found hers died at almost 5 months in utero. Drs were in no hurry to remove it even though it was dead I forget why. After a couple weeks they induced labor.
She eventually had 2 but I still remember that.
Oh by the way. Do a Google on " stone babies". You won't believe it.

a normal pregnancy. shortly before she was due, routine exam showed that the umbilical cord had disconnected, and the fetus was, in fact, dead. she was forced to wait until she went into labor a week later, going through 28 hours of labor-- to deliver a dead fetus. she never fully recovered.

My baby died in utero at 8 months. The doctors wanted my body to do what comes naturally and I was forced to carry it for another 3 weeks. They finally induced labor after my feet and hands started to swell badly. A woman cannot carry a dead fetus for any length of time before she becomes poisoned by necrotic matter. These people are ghoulish.

so there's zero benefit to the fetus of being carried to term? they're not going to let that stop them from controlling women anyway!

I am also sick of the narrative - and the gaslighting that took place last year - that it's not important to have a woman president.

It's very important. It's probably the overriding issue of my life at this moment, and I fear I'm never going to see it.

Labor and delivery always carries an element of risk. We literally take our lives in our hands every time we become pregnant and chose to try to bring a new baby into the world.

Why endanger a woman's life for absolutely no benefit?

Of course I know why - because women's lov s are less valuable, less worthy of protection and less important. Not just less than a dead fetus. Less than nothing especially if we cannot procreate.

the woman can become seriously ill:

According to ExitCare Patient Information, if the fetus is not removed in a timely manner, the mother can develop disseminated intravascular coagulation. This problem with blood clotting leads to excessive bleeding, which can cause damage to internal organs as well as the muscles. Excessive blood flow can cause ruptures in the organ tissues and blood vessels and create breeding grounds for infection. The mother is at risk for blood loss, with complications from toxins and bacteria. This can be a life-threatening situation.

A "Dead Fetus" is dead tissue...Dead tissue makes people really sick. You couldn't carry a "dead fetus" to term because mom would be in septic shock or dead herself. Fuck these morons. They want the world to think just like them and be just as ignorant.

If you're against abortion on religious grounds then not supporting removing a dead fetus is the the same as Christians that don't believe in medicine or operations. Which is obviously a religious belief and unconstitutional.

If an OB/GYN removes a dead fetus, it might be sometimes difficult to prove that the fetus was truly dead. The forced-birthers figure that it's OK to put the lives of many women in jeopardy to disallow the rare situation where a live fetus is aborted but the doctor claims it had died before the procedure.

The message remains crystal-clear -- women's lives count for nothing.

...and nobody will go to jail for it. Any pregnancy that doesn't result in a live birth is, to them, likely a criminal act that someone tried to cover up. In their fevered imaginations, OB/GYNs will just do terminations willy-nilly and state after the fact that the fetus was not alive.

There was a very sad example of this about a year and a half ago when a young pregnant woman (about 18) who lived in North Carolina experienced the passing of the child in her womb. No doctor in NC would abort because of the fear of being confronted by the state for doing so.

After a short time, the girl's grandfather became so upset over the whole situation he put his granddaughter in his car and drove to the Washington, DC area. He stopped at a hospital emergency room and told the personnel there what had happened. The young woman was immediately taken to be treated, but she was left without the ability to ever have children.

The Federal Government and State governments have no business interfering in these situations. But if they are going to comment, they should educate themselves on the facts so they do not mislead other woman possibly in the same situation. Additional comments like Lundgren made simply demonstrate a willingness to ignore the health and well-being of mothers in this situations. This must stop. Vote them out of office.

in the 80s. Apparently her placenta would stop growing at 8 months, so the fetus would die. They made her wait until she went into labor. It was terrible. I thought my cousin was going to have a nervous break down.

I would sit with her for hours back then... It took its toll on her, one I think you can only understand if you have been there

the fetus is expelled from the womb. If a fetus dies in the womb and passes through the birth canal, it is a 'stillbirth'.
Carrying a dead fetus in the womb for months, could result in the death of the mother.
