(55,139 posts)Nicholas relied on his wife, the Tsarina Alexandra. She had no training in politics, etc. But she was very religious and very frightened. She was frightened that the divine right of the Romanov Family to continue to rule Russia was dependent on their hemophiliac son, Tsarevich Alexei, to live to adulthood. Along came a mystic, Rasputin, who calmed things down and became a trusted advisor to the Tsar. A grifter at heart, Rasputin took over everything from government to prosecuting the First World War. It didn't end well for all concerned.

(11,434 posts)The youngest, Alexei, seems to have been developing into an entitled piece of work according to some recent biographies - his mother treating him literally like God's gift to Russia didn't help. The older ones (and at 22, 21, 19, and 17 I hesitate to call them kids) are more of a cipher: their mother kept them isolated and treated them as a single organism, and IMO tried to keep them infantile and dependent. I don't think they were allowed to develop their own personalities.
