http://www.commondreams.org/news/2017/04/04/carbon-levels-could-hit-pre-human-palms-arctic-state-mid-centuryResearch published in Nature Communications finds that if fossil fuel use continues unabated, the atmosphere could revert "to values of CO2 not seen since the early Eocene (50 million years ago)," a time when humans did not exist, by the middle of the 21st century.
Dana L. Royer, a paleoclimate researcher at Wesleyan University and co-author of the study, told Climate Central, "The early Eocene was much warmer than today: global mean surface temperature was at least 10°C (18°F) warmer than today. There was little-to-no permanent ice. Palms and crocodiles inhabited the Canadian Arctic."

This, beyond ALL else, was the most important issue that voters faced last year. The very future of human civilization was in our hands, because industrialized civilization will not survive such a massive environmental change in such a short period of time.
And, either through antipathy or outright ignorance, the American people apparently felt that was a fair trade off and cast their votes (or stayed at home and didn't vote at all) in favor of a mass extinction event.

Most Americans don't understand the science and are getting their news from people who can't/won't properly explain it to them. Worse still, many are getting their news from sources telling them it's a hoax!! The ignorance is unbearable at times. It's impossible not to lose respect for people.
