I have been away since election day - tough days. I'm not surprised by any of the stuff I'm seeing and I expect it to continue. But I was thinking about how bad it has gotten lately. Deplorables control almost everything in this country now. It looks like the SCOTUS is going down this week. They have both house's of congress and the POTUS. To make matters worse they control 32 state legislatures and most governorship's. The state control is what scares me the most. Constitutional changes can be made with 2/3 of states and if my math is correct that would mean 34 states. We need to start turning this around or who knows what the deplorables will do to the constitution and our country! They are on the verge of having the power to do literally anything they want. I'm scared. What are our safeguards to prevent this doomsday scenario?

(1,714 posts)start by not calling names? "Deplorable" became a badge of honor, and could have cost HRC the election.

(16,104 posts)No mere name we call them does justice to the disgusting scum they are.
You know what cost us the election?
What Russian and rightwing bots called Hillary on every form of FAKE NEWS social media available - demonizing her to the point where the morons chose a racist, misogynist, filthy, unqualified, inexperienced - DEPLORABLE - idiot!

(4,490 posts)Yes, it's a bad move for a presidential candidate to call any voters names. She had some big messaging problems at times. That's a hell of a lot different than getting large numbers of strangers to coddle awful people on the internet. If the later is a key to victory, we should just give up now.
We should instead call them fucking stupid racist assholes.
If there's one thing in the entire universe that facilitated Trump's theft of the election that Clinton won, it sure as shit wasn't Clinton correctly identifying his idiot troglodyte base as "deplorables."

(12,645 posts)The Christo-Fascists and Libratarians cocoon themselves in such an echo chamber, they think they're a majority. To fight them properly, the population needs to make them realize they are the minority and they need to take an active majority into account if they're going to govern.
One cannot govern a country like one runs a business. They actually work for all of us...and that needs to be hammered home time and time again.

(35,041 posts)That is one of the safeguards.
It's time to question the legitimacy of this control.

(2,848 posts)2/3 can call a convention but it takes 3/4 to ratify! phew!

(2,795 posts)I hadn't even thought of that until then because it's kind of hard to keep track of how many states are in the majority of repub control.
The Kochs and the well funded organizations of the religious right knew how to fix their problem. Until dumpy, the presidency was not an easy gain. So work from the bottom up and that has been far more successful. They have their influence in everything - city councils, zoning boards, school boards, state senators and reps.
You can be sure they know how close they are. The midterms are going to flooded with money and lies. Here in Colorado, 2018 elects a new governor. Because we're a swing state, they'll be coming for this governorship, I'm sure.

(24,399 posts)With Trump being so unpopular nationally already and no signs that this is likely going to change, we should be able to at least grab a few Governorships, State Legislatures (partially or completely) to reduce their amount of power. The party in power in the WH typically loses seats during midterms. If we're not energized (or "enthused" enough by now to do anything to stop the Republicans from following through with calling for a Constitutional Convention (which would only be limited by what their participants want to bring up) , then I don't know what to suggest.
