General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI see a lot of long faces here. We won the culture war. The GOP is not ten feet tall...
How do we know we won the culture war? Because the Deplorables can only discuss their homophobic, xenophobic, racist, misogynistic. et cetera bullshit online. If they do it in real life they're shunned and will likely lose their jobs unless they work at Goober's filling station. Check that. Goober had a good heart. He could never be a Deplorable.
We brought the homophobic bigots in North Carolina to their knees with our boycotts. Many states caved without a fight. The dollar talks...
Let SCOTUS play their reactionary games. I want to see which businesses discriminate against anybody. We will use the dollar and the boycott to bring them to their knees.

(28,794 posts)NC was too stupid for. Here in NC, where i live, the republicans are every bit as cruel, vile, and disgusting as any in DC. they will ruin the state if we can't stop them, either this year or next.
the good news is that more people are active than ever. i am more active than ever, and i am not alone. the catalyst for this is trump, and the clear damage the republicans are heaping on the common american.

(99,710 posts)Even Michael Jordan who is a god in North Carolina, albeit an apolitical one, criticized the law.
And even Burr voted to repeal "don't ask , don't tell." The winds are shifting.

(14,173 posts)3 million more in the popular vote
but more than that, more people live in big cities than the country side by a big margin. And also it is shown that cities house a larger percent of more liberal people than not. (they are exposed to more cultures, races, attitudes which has a dampening effect on xenophobia). Sadly many of that liberal majority do not vote. But they will still side with civil rights for minorities and other liberal positions if pinned down.
So in reality the vast majority has already moved on from gay marriage, pot legalization, for examples, and would side with Democrats more if, once again, pinned down. The problem of course during election time is getting enough of them to the polling station.

(7,394 posts)There are no Red State paradises. Polluted, ugly, violent, high cancer rates, high alcoholism, low tourism -- who wants to base a tech business in a state that teaches the bible in public schools? No one. Everyone of worth flees. Everyone who stays, decays.
The all-knowing liberal consumer will probably right most corporate wrongs over time -- I think that's true. Liberals are smarter and more information-based, harder to fool -- 'greenwashing' is more difficult than ever, with the entire internet watching.
Great post.

(11,949 posts)Long term I mean. Even if this congress managed to gut health care the majority of Americans and even many Trump supporters see health care as a right.
That is why they cannot reach a deal yet. If the republicans follow the 30 craziest members from super safe districts they will get killed in the future.

demanding a package that doesn't include FOX
because it is divisive
and I don't want it in my programming
Told them I'm researching options so
If they value my business
They'll find a way to remove it from basic programming
AND
they can use my comments for training purposes

I've talked with our Cox provider reps many times about having to pay for religious channels - no offense to anyone here but they are offensive to this atheist. Wonder how religious folks would like having to pay for four channels of "atheist network" programming?!
Got nowhere with Cox. Next time I complain, I'll add Fox FakeNews to my list. Reps always told me if I want such & such channels, I must take the damn religious programming too.

(7,358 posts)And then there's that nut job Swaggert .. I say that it is Unconstitutional and goes against the Establishment Clause of the 1st Amendment. Make people pay for it if they want to watch it. It is also ironic that the very people that send money into those shows to support them, are usually poor, and have many problems and issues, mostly financial stress. These Ministries are blood sucking demons.

(99,710 posts)We can bring a state or corporation who discriminates to its knees , even red ones.
Look at freaking Arkansas and Indiana. It doesn't get much redder, and even they were deterred from passing anti gay laws because they don't want to be boycotted.
That was the whole point of my thread. No matter what SCOTUS does there are a majority of Americans who oppose discrimination against anyone, some of whom will use their economic power to punish those who do, a minority of Deplorables notwithstanding.
That doesn't mean Deplorables can't express their hate on the "internets" and such. They just can't put it into law.

(32,704 posts)There appears to be a resurgence of very vocal, in-your-face-type deplorables who are emboldened by trump. Personally speaking, the deplorable aspect of Trump's victory is what hurt the most.
But at the end of the day, I really don't care what they say or think.
If I have a long face right now, it's because we have a mentally unstable madman calling the shots (literally) and making us all less safe. It's because the elected GOP is ready to overturn everything I care about. I want the ACA to remain in place and improve. I want my rights (including reproductive rights) to be protected and preserved under the law. And I should have equal and fair access to EVERYTHING that anyone else has access to--quality education, home mortgage, jobs, etc.

(99,710 posts)You think a Deplorable can show up to work at say, Wal-Mart, and start making bigoted or racist comments and not lose his or her job.
Ultimately for laws to work they have to represent the values of the culture.
We have freaking marriage equality in America. There are many so called progressive countries who don't.
