1. A few reasons

1) He was the ideological spawn of Scalia.

2) They knew that the D's wouldn't let them have any of their nominees.

3) They wanted to show their own base that they actually are in charge.

That was one of Thomas' selling points: a reliable operative who will be in their corner for decades.

Young and reliably conservative.

He's also unobjectionable enough to the more moderate Republican senators (Collins, etc.) that they would be willing to go nuke... Because what they want more than anything is to replaced Ginsburg/Breyer with someone like him, and that wouldn't happen without first killing it.

Oh... And they firmly believe that the filibuster was already gone for their use anyway.

the social conservatives are going to need some shoring up as the economic squeeze begins and the fool-in-chief continues his debauched corruption. they need a way to justify continuing to vote for the criminal scumbags picking their pockets. racism and sexism alone won't do it, but getting a hardcore Scalia clone on the court probably will.

for the laws to change so when they lose their MasterCard instead of the credit card company absorbing the losses, THEY have to pay them.

They cant WAIT for the laws to change so DOW can come to their town and change their water into sewer.

They cant WAIT for the laws to change so overtime pay is no longer required or expected.

They cant WAIT for the laws to change so when their grandson is killed by a defective product they cant sue shit.

7. it's not about gorsuch in particular. it's about winning.

they screw garland because he was nominated by a democrat and they could.

they're changing the rules to get gorsuch in because he was nominated by a republican and they can.

letting democrats successfully filibuster a nominee would be a "win" for democrats even if the replacement nominee is 10 times worse. in fact, now that they've done away with the filibuster, they could get an ever wackier guy on the court. they don't even care about that because that wouldn't generate a "win" headline for them.

they want gorsuch because this gets them a "win" headline.

that's pretty much all there is to it.

It doesn't matter what the political leanings are. Russia just wants to weakens America as much as possible.
