They will need a massive shock to their their own wallets and those of their relatives before they even begin to think about waking the hell up. Decades of brainwashing from Fox News, hate radio, and preachers has created a race of zombies.

(90,017 posts)All I've got is one word: Deplorable.
If you voted for trump, you are deplorable. Not to mention how gullible a mark you were - to believe him, even while he was lying to you. And how gullible a mark you were that you swallowed, whole, without even chewing, ANY AND ALL lies about Hillary Clinton.
I've mentioned elsewhere that I find it most illuminating to read the comments after some editorial or news story. There are still trolls out there trolling. And weeks AFTER that unforgivable loon Alex Jones had to eat his own shit about Pizzagate and that child sex/sexual molestation/sexual fill-in-the-blank-here operation purportedly going on in the back room of that DC pizza joint, which was so phony that even he had to apologize and acknowledge he was wrong - never mind! There were STILL dingdongs in those comment sections who STILL believed that Hillary was running that fictitious child sex-whatever ring - even up to and including not just molestation or fornication but cannibalism.
And they still wanna believe that shit? Well, then, I no longer bother trying to sympathize, or "understand" where they're coming from. I've heard, seen, and read enough to know.

(5,836 posts)but that was one aspect of the downfall of Hitler's reich. They poured enormous resources into systematically slaughtering many of their best and brightest-- resources and individuals which could have led to the victory of the nazis. Fortunately, that didn't happen, but it shows the absolute folly of putting prejudice above self-interest.

(6,916 posts)So much of Trump voting is about hating Hillary and liberals.
And that hate is largely generated by Fox and Limbaugh and Breitbart and Newsmax and IJT and Gateway Pundit and all the rest of the GOP donor-funded media.
Don't hate this woman, hate the CEOs of those media orgs that lie to her so they can get votes to cut taxes on the rich.

As more elderly Trumpers die off and the Pence types reduce family planning we will see more children of color being born, turning 18, and voting for Democrats. We are going to see a radical demographic shift very soon.

(51,267 posts)Virginia, Nevada, Colorado, and Obama even won North Carolina and Indiana and the district that contains Omaha in 2008.
Trump picked up Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, and PA.
People move for jobs. I have many times. And many formerly Democratic workers have been moving from the upper Midwest down to the south for jobs and more affordable housing. We can see more competition in many southern states with strong economies and recent migration and large minority populations.
Whites are currently less than 50% of Texas and people have been moving there for jobs. We can win Texas in another few years. Similar things can happen in Florida and Arizona.
There's a lot of changes going on. And social conservatives are trying to recruit minorities. We should see to it that they stay with us and earn their votes.

(21,646 posts)Krugman believes it does. He argues that Trump's appeal is rooted not in the substance of his politics but in his crude personality, which gives "outright, unapologetic voice to racism, sexism, contempt for 'losers' and so onfeelings that have always been an important source of conservative support, but have long been things you werent supposed to talk about openly."
"One way to think about Fox News in general, and Mr. OReilly in particular, is that they provide a safe space for people who want an affirmation that their uglier impulses are, in fact, justified and perfectly O.K.," he continues. "And one way to think about the Trump White House is that its attempting to expand that safe space to include the nation as a whole."

(9,990 posts)She despises those illegals, and anyone in the "other" category since she is better and a solid member of America's privileged majority. And the entrenched Ayn Rand mindset of those holding the reins of power in the GOP despise her and those like her equally if not more. To them she is nothing more than a worthless eater demanding a handout. Ironically, this is precisely how she feels about those who prompted her to vote for Trump. And doubly ironic that she would choose to do so again, only from under the bus.

(13,247 posts)It's easy for this Trump supporter to cling to her convictions and being "right" because her program hasn't been cut, yet. It would be interesting to see what she would say after a couple of years without her "lifeline." Her thought processes appear to be "frozen" and she is unable to stretch her brain to take in new information, as is the case with so many diehard Republicans. Only the actual experience of deprivation over time might make a difference in her voting choices. It's really sad, not just for her, but also for the rest of us who are forced to live with the awful consequences of Republicans running the government.
I understand. This article is about my father and the people I have lived with after relocating to Florida 12 years ago. They have been tortured for 8 yrs knowing that a black family has been sleeping in the White House, period. They are prepared to burn that house down.

(6,251 posts)However, I wish Clinton had never used the expression, "Basket of Deplorables" Nothing good could have come from that. The people who were going to vote for her already felt that way, and it only served to galvanize those who were against her. For those on the fence, it had a negative effect; this is not how you should refer to a portion of the population you intend to govern. It was a shame, because it worked against her and helped to cost us a potential great president.
