Race vs. Economics: Can Dems win Trump voters?

One point they don't mention in the segment.
I don't think we are going to win over any voter whose head can easily be turned by a dog whistle of racism. Or the overt actions of a trump.
These voters we should not spend much, if any, resources on.
Instead we should focus our efforts on base turnout, those eligible who don't already vote and register them, and all third party voters along with fighting voter suppression programs the GOP enact.

(11,746 posts)WE, THE PEOPLE need to vote.
It's that simple. Everything else is noise. Vote Democratic. Vote. Get out and vote.
"We don't need to win over racists". Or sexists. Or homophobes. Or xenophobes or islamophobes, or any other bigots. Thank you for putting it so succinctly. It's all that needs to be said.

Hillary won white working class voters who said the economy was their top issue.

(42,641 posts)And a strong, worker-centered economic message might also attract the racist working class voters as a bonus. But any worker-centered economic message must also focus on the absolute necessity of fighting racism.
Racism is a tool of division for capitalists.

(1,387 posts)Any party that would have Trump voters as members , I don't want to be a part of. I'm sick of these people.
We need to focus on counteracting voter suppression and gerrymandering. (Let's not forget 2020 is a census year.)

(10,313 posts)Get Out The Vote drives, anti-gerrymandering, anti voter suppression are all important.
However white middle aged men who don't see their prospects for prosperity getting any better will think "it was better for me in the good old days" and vote accordingly. Back in the late 20th Century we were more racist as a culture, and less environmentally aware. There has to be an effective message to the "God, gays and guns" agenda that the far right pushes.
I disagree about the thought of leaving behind the voter who may have used their inherent racist and sexist biases about choosing their candidate. I'm not saying we need to adopt a racial message but we really need not only a 50+ state strategy, we also need a "no voter left behind" strategy too. The Democratic Party is not a minor 3rd party - if it were then targeting a few friendly areas is a good strategy. We're not going to win the middle aged white men over on all the inclusion messages of present, but we can win them over when we speak to their real needs.

(10,437 posts)Plight is because of govt helping non-whites...Educating them hasn't worked so far...As their inner bigotry still rules their brain and they lie to themselves that some how the system works if they can just get rid of all the takers. They don't want to believe the system is rigged to enrich corporations and the wealthy...It's complete cognitive dissonance..

(35,454 posts)She can get face time on tv. The idea that they were ignored by the Dems. And, bam, all of a sudden were told she has a book just out on exactly that.

(5,170 posts)not just white. I am so fucking sick and tired of hearing about the "white working class." It's just the working class--of all colors. The GOP left them behind a long time ago and many Dems don't seem to give a rip either. Asking the Democratic Party to pay attention to economic issues is what it required. And is has nothing to do with "whiteness." It has to do with the fact that it is NOT OK to be "liberal" on social issues and side with big business on everything economic. You can't pay your rent with moral outrage.
