Honestly, North Korea scares the living shit out of me and I consider this the most important issue we are facing as a country right now. That being said; shit just got real. North Korea is telling foreign journalists to now flee South Korea and there is a "big event" coming Thursday.
We have a battle group steaming into the area and China now has formally warned North Korea NOT to mess with the United States. Folks, I'm not liking this at all. Not one damn bit!
I'm seeing reports that NK has told people to evac Pyongyang immediately. Umm....someone please tell me that's fake news?

(39,376 posts)I expect a 4am EDT test.
I then expect an overreaction by trump who is being faced with Carter Page and Manafort back in the news. trump might also be shuffling his staff and replacing Spicer (my guess) and possibly Bannon.
I'm glad no one I know is in SK anymore.

(65 posts)They are saber rattlers, on an annual basis (during joint military exercises with S. Korea). If they strike South Korea, they know their entire country will be turned to rubble. Nobody is that stupid. Nobody is even that crazy.

(31,145 posts)Leaders who live in a bubble begin to believe their own propaganda. They start to think they are special and chosen by God and that can lead to just about any outcome. He could be no different from a mass shooter type mentality. They are rare but they are out there and sometimes they end up as leaders of countries.

(17,139 posts)If he thinks Trump will strike (like Syria), he may decide to strike first.
He has always been worrisome because he is so unpredictible. He and his father have starved a hell of a lot of people to funnel everything to the state.
We have 2 massive egos with large military forces who will do whatever.

(62,444 posts)The Pyongyang subway is deep and hardened. There is no way to "order the evacuation of Pyongyang". How? By walking? To where?
People aren't free to move around that country. The notion that the privileged leadership class who are allowed to live in Pyongyang would be "ordered to evacuate" is sheer bullshit.

(1,434 posts)There are very few US citizens on N Korea at any time.
US citizens are very strongly advised not to go there.

(37,772 posts)There are a lot of US military dependents in South Korea. One can probably get Command Sponsorship in all the military areas of Korea with the exception of Area 1.....the area north of Seoul to the DMZ. When I was stationed in Area 1 they were pretty strict about granting Command Sponsorship to enlisted troops. When my son was stationed there a couple of years ago, it was pretty common to get sponsorship.
They actually had an actual, physical, practice evacuation last summer. From Area I and Area 2, bus to Seoul then bus to Dageu and then bus to Busan. From there, airlift by Air Force C130s to Okinawa.
As far as US citizens being discouraged from traveling to South Korea, I haven't seen any State Dept. advisories against travel there, but that was pre 45/140. I'm scheduled to go back to Seoul in July so I'll be checking...if the country still exists.

The US has had 60+ years to figure out how to respond.
Artillery, nukes, invasion, etc will not end up well for NK.

(6,154 posts)NK has always been a spoiled child threatening to throw their toys at you and walk away screaming. They have been all bark and no bite. I'm NOT saying they aren't terrifyingly dangerous. I really think they are. They have nukes, and enough conventional weaponry aimed at South Korea alone to kill millions.
However the real danger starts not when you have one 3 yr old petulant child on the scene but 2. Because as dangerous as NK is real danger is in misreading them. Almost all of their sabre rattling is done to scare, much in the way that a rattle snake is warning you with its rattle. Doesn't mean that the snake necessarily wants to bite, in fact it knows it's terribly costly for it to do so. But it also feels terribly cornered and so they feel like they need to let you know they are dangerous.
If you know the ballet they are dancing you can at least work with them. When your own government though is ALSO a petulant 3 yr old that's when shit really worries me.

(11,779 posts)The US-based monitoring group 38 North said on Thursday that the satellite images from the Norths Punggye-ri site showed it was primed and ready for what would be the countrys sixth nuclear test since 2006.
Commercial satellite imagery of North Koreas Punggye-ri nuclear test site from April 12 shows continued activity around the North Portal, new activity in the main administrative area, and a few personnel around the sites Command Center, 38 North said on its website.
In the courtyards of the main administrative area are approximately 11 probable tarp-covered pallets of equipment or supplies, a formation of personnel, and several individuals walking about, the site added.
