A man trying to impose what he calls the civil part of the sharia law in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis has sparked anger among local residents and Muslim leaders.
Abdullah Rashid, 22, a Georgia native who moved to Cedar-Riverside last year, has been making the rounds in the Somali-dominated neighborhood, telling people not to drink, use drugs or interact with the opposite sex. If he sees Muslim women he believes are dressed inappropriately, he approaches them and suggests they should wear a jilbab, a long, flowing garment. And he says hes recruiting others to join the effort.
But local Muslim leaders are sounding the alarm. They are working to stop Rashids group, General Presidency of the Religious Affairs and Welfare of the Ummah, and have notified Minneapolis police, who say hes being banned from a Cedar-Riverside property. Some say the group is preying on vulnerable young Muslims in a community that has dealt with national scrutiny around radicalization and terrorism.
What hes doing is wrong and doesnt reflect the community at all, said Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

(11,686 posts)women they are working at building themselves? What are they going to call it when rich white American males have it? All they are doing is changing the name.

I see no mention of rich white men. Only a Muslim community united against a seemingly radicalized Muslim convert?
Perhaps I missed something?

(16,327 posts)The Brooklyn shopkeeper was already home for the night when her phone rang: a man who said he was from a neighborhood modesty committee was concerned that the mannequins in her stores window, used to display womens clothing, might inadvertently arouse passing men and boys.
The man said, Do the neighborhood a favor and take it out of the window, the stores manager recalled. Were trying to safeguard our community.
In many neighborhoods, a store owner might shrug off such a call. But on Lee Avenue, the commercial spine of Hasidic Williamsburg, the warning carried an implied threat comply with community standards or be shunned. It is a potent threat in a neighborhood where shadowy, sometimes self-appointed modesty squads use social and economic leverage to enforce conformity.
The owner wrestled with the request for a day or two, but decided to follow it. We can sell it without mannequins, so we might as well do what the public wants, the owner told the manager, who asked not to be identified because of fear of reprisals for talking.

And fuck'em all, be it Muslim, Jewish, or Christian "sharia".

I worry about when the Christians code their "Sharia" into law since we are under Rethug rule.

(11,686 posts)that our Republicans are fighting Muslims despite them practicing true faith ( the good ones ) or radical faith ( the violent ones ) yet at the same time they are trying to make law that is no different than what they are fighting in Minneapolis. I understand not wanting this man to own fire arms and push his radical agenda on others and it is good that the true Muslims are fighting against it but I feel for them also in the way that they will be targeted by our government at some point and treated no differently than this guy. How can our government help the true Muslims fight people like this when they do not even want them here?
