Can we come up with an alternative name for "Christian Right"....

... like we came up with Jihadists vs Islamic Extremists?

I really don't like how "Christian" has been co-opted, especially now that I've seen on DU how people whose opinions I normally respect have been mislead into thinking that those people really do define Christianity.

A Buddhist friend of mine (now passed) once told me that she believed Christianity was a death cult. That was the first time I heard it described that way, and it made PERFECT sense.

There is absolutely nothing Christian about these people.

Then what you have left are white supremacists. Just your typical hate group like any other hate group.

Jesus was an observant Jew as were his followers. It was the self-described "Apostle" Paul who co-opted his Judaism sect and transformed it to something completely different to fit his own agenda and line his own pockets.

There's really nothing more Christian than using the veil of faith for your own selfish purposes. As such they are the epitome of Christianity.

I seem to recall Jesus having a beef with them about being obsessed with effusive displays of piety and doing a lot of scolding while being deficient in humility, forgiveness, and other actions that would entail from being truly pious.

The so-called "Christian Right" not only is neither, but far more important, they're modern-day Pharisees, hypocrisy, self-righteousness, and contempt for the poor, minorities, and women on full display who would crucify Jesus all over again if he were on Earth in the US.

Because that applies to all the other bigoted whackos out there, too, and kind of plants that similarity in the minds of readers/listeners.

Some, like Christo-Fascist, are funny and accurate, but my be really off putting, even to people who aren't lunatics.

I think it bears remembering/repeating that Bush and his administration purposely replaced all uses of the word "religion" with "faith," because religion polls badly with people. Democrats who want a separation of church and state really need to go back to the messaging of "religion."

29. Real question ...

Given how important Christianity is in public life in America -- Why is there not a bigger public "fight" in the Christian religious community regarding the way the scriptures etc. are interpreted and implemented in daily life in America? (Good works, helping the poor, etc.) Having grown up in the Southern Baptist tradition, but out of it now, it just seems to me that the values that Jesus preached about have been seriously hijacked?

It seems like Christians themselves would be seriously pissed and doing something about this vocally, in large numbers. (Islam has the same challenge.)

Evangelicals tend to believe in ultimate authority (God) and they try to impose their beliefs on others -- e.g., teaching Biblical creationism in schools.

White evangelicals view themselves as representatives of ultimate authority, granted to them by God and above question, and they perceive their white culture as a reflection of it. Concerns about equality among people of all cultures is viewed as a threat to their authority granted by God.

All happiness and success in this country comes from God as well, and they arrogantly believe it's their adherence to old cultural/religious beliefs that granted them favored status throughout American history, and they pulled up the rest of the country as well. Breaks from the cultural ways of the past is thereby opposed to God, and it means doom for the country at large.

Since all people are sinners in their minds, Trump's moral mistakes are forgiven as long as he promotes their beliefs in general -- e.g., God has favored the USA because he favors their religious and cultural beliefs.
