Prolific actor Clifton James Dead at 96http://www.bdtonline.com/news/entertainment/clifton-james-sheriff-in-james-bond-films-dies-at/article_6269361b-89f9-593e-b696-71abaa7c62eb.html
Clifton James, best known for his indelible portrayal of a southern sheriff in two James Bond films but who was most proud of his work on the stage, has died. He was 96. His daughter, Lynn James, said he died Saturday at another daughter's home in Gladstone, Oregon, due to complications from diabetes. "He was the most outgoing person, beloved by everybody," Lynn James said. "I don't think the man had an enemy. We were incredibly blessed to have had him in our lives." James often played a convincing southerner but loved working on the stage in New York during the prime of his career. </snip> ![]() https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clifton_James Cross gently, Mr James! ![]()

5. My favorite Clifton James role
was "DJ Rankin" in "...Tick...Tick...Tick..."
A somewhat overlooked 1970 movie about racial tensions in a southern county that has elected its first black sheriff (Jimmy Price played by Jim Brown). Growing up in Alabama in the 1960's, I recognized Clifton's character in many of the people I knew - conflicted between prejudice and personal decency. For many, prejudice usually won out. But a few, like DJ Rankin, rose above it. George Kennedy turned in a great performance as the former sheriff. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065360/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_68 |

6. I hadn't known he was from Washington State.
Cool.
His Southern accent was very convincing. Which is why he got cast in so many hayseed roles, I'm sure... |
