Trump throwing the kids hats, not knowing the name of Kim Jong-Un and thinking Kim Jong-Un has been be power since the ninties, saying we bombed Iraq, not Syria, having to be reminded to put his hand over his heart and now calling Paul Ryan - Ron.
Full disclosure: Im not a medical professional. But at this point it doesnt take a doctor to see the rather obvious pattern in front of us. Donald Trumps mental lapses are growing more frequent, more alarming, cutting closer to home, and are now occurring multiple times per day. In fact if one were to judge Trump based on his past two days alone, one might conclude his mental capacity is all but fully vacated. Take a look at these several recent examples.
Beginning on Monday morning, Donald Trump was involved in a bizarre incident in which he took a hat from a kid, autographed it, and flung it into the crowd instead of handing it back to him (video link here). The kids yelled out to try to correct his strange behavior, but instead he responded by doing the same thing to another kids hat. This was in the same timeframe in which he couldnt remember to put his hand over his heart during the National Anthem and had to be visibly nudged by his wife. But these minor incidents were merely warning shots.
By Monday evening, Trump had unwittingly revealed during a Fox News interview that he didnt know the name of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, the one hes been threatening to blow up for the past week. He also revealed that he believes thirty-two year old Kim Jong-Un is the same guy whos been in power since the nineties. Trump doesnt know that Kim and his late father Kim-Jong Il are two different people (Talking Points Memo). Worse, as recently as a few months ago, Trumps words during the campaign made clear that he did know that these were two different leaders. In other words, hes completely forgotten the key things that he previously knew about North Korea. And even if his advisers have tried to remind him, it appears hes now incapable of hanging on to that information.
But perhaps Monday was just a singularly bad day for Donald Trump? As it turns out, he traveled to a political rally today in Wisconsin, the home state of Speaker Paul Ryan. The two Republicans dont always get along, but they know each other quite well. And yet Trump kept referring to Paul Ryan as Ron during his speech today (Bipartisan Report). On their own, any one of these incidents could be seen as a mere gaffe, an absent moment. But strung together, they paint a picture of a man whos become mentally vacant.

It's a one-two punch that will put Trump down. One is Russia-Putin. Two is his declining mental health. cc @LouiseMensch @docrocktex26

(9,143 posts)touch of dementia, as have many people his age, but he is a guy who isn't smart, but thinks he's one of the smartest guys on the planet and has been allowed to BS his way into a position that really needs somebody who should be well above average intelligence.
His whole career in real estate was not because he was smart, but because he had a rich daddy. His father had 30,000 properties in New York in the 70s. Do the math - Trump has not made any money at all, although he has got by losing billions for others - bankers, investors, contractors, etc. It has been a vanity project filled with bad decisions for somebody who isn't smart, but he believes his own hype. All we are seeing is a continuation of that - somebody who is pretty dumb wearing shoes that are too big.

rTrump does this consistently. God it must be awful being Mrs. Donald Trump (or anyone with that last name for that matter). You'd literally have to had sold your very soul to whatever devil in whatever hell one believes in.
As someone upthread noted, dementia is very much like his consistent odd behaviors and misspeaks in the early stages. Taken together they appear small - at first. As things progress, it's more noticeable, but even then people become used to the eccentricities and chalk them up to Mom or Dad or gran being 'eccentric' in their older years. I know my siblings did at first with both Mom and Dad. Their doctors told us (much later) that the elderly know their mental faculties are declining and they're pretty savvy for most of the time and for a while about maintaining an equilibrium that masks most of it. But the doctor told us that they will fall off the plateaus they maintain because of sudden onset of serious illness (even something like the flu) or a fall, a bone break, a traumatic incident or event (loss of a sibling, spouse, any kind of accident, even one without physical injury) can cause a PTSD reaction that will exacerbate any underlying mental condition that's there and actually worsen them. It definitely happened to both my parents, both following falls, one of which resulted in a broken hip.
tRump is of an age that the ongoing stress and his inability to sleep (apparently) will only worsen any underlying condition, and we know his father died of Alzheimer's dementia. I'm guessing tRump has the same issues, along with his own raging Narcissism.

(81,527 posts)Remember that sad photo of him hustling up the steps of the White House to greet the Obamas on the morning of January 20th? The photo showed Melania just getting out of the car, carrying her gift for Barack and Michelle, and watching as her husband hustled up the stairs ahead of her. Didn't even wait for her to get out of the car.
Then I remember a photo of how the Obamas - together - approached the Bushes who were waiting at the top of those same steps, eight years earlier. Barack made sure to escort his wife from the car, and they stepped forward and upward together.
This jerk? Well, she's just a decorative accessory, methinks. That's certainly how she's treated.
I've said it before - I kinda worry about Melania. She's in her late 40s now. Wonder how soon he decides it's time to get a new younger/prettier, because Wife #3 has gone past her sell-by date?

(8,781 posts)I love to go on "Ask a Patient" for side effects on drugs because you get real people telling their side effects - not pharma. Mental fog seems to be a big side effect of Propecia. Plus, Bornstein said Trump is also on a cholesterol drug. Cholesterol drugs are also known for causing mental fog. Plus, we don't know what other upper/downers Trump could be on. My mother's mind would be totally normal on one beta blocker blood pressure pill, but if she took 2 she would be nuts. Drugs effect people's minds big time. Here are a few ratings on this drug from the "Ask a Patient" site - there are almost 500 ratings.

Also, he supposedly only sleeps a very few hours every night, and quite frankly someone who is chronically sleep deprived is also highly forgetful, can't learn new things, and is generally in a mental fog.

(5,815 posts)He clearly indicated it was Ryan he was talking about but then kept referring to him as Ron. The first time he did it, I thought I misheard him. The second time, I actually looked up at the TV and wondered aloud...what did he just say?
I think there is clearly "something" going on with tRump. Another thing I noticed is he has so many other people taking on duties that you'd expect him to be doing, especially since it is early in his term. Having Pence out front and center, making stern statements, wearing the bomber jacket to me is a clear sign he is preparing him (and the people) for a Pence Presidency. Right now we mostly see tRump doing ceremonial things, photo ops, signing orders, etc. The trips to Mar-a-Lago put him back in familiar territory and where he can do as he pleases...play golf and eat.
I suspect they won't be able to hide this much longer as he continues to make mistakes and has erratic behavior that even an arm chair psychiatrist can see is not right. How long and with what tactics his family will use to keep us bamboozled remains to be seen. But one of these days, the emperor is gonna wander out into the Rose Garden naked as a jay bird in the spring time and the cat will be out of the bag. Just sayin'......

(5,738 posts)The job is incredibly demanding, and he is getting little sleep. He may enjoy all these trips to Mar-a-Lago, but the travel also takes a toll - and the golf. And the 'effin TWEETS in the middle of the night!
He would be better off with a healthy diet and a few hours of quality sleep. If he doesn't capitulate and change his lifestyle somewhat, to adapt to the demands of the job, he will only get worse.
If he does have some decline, certainly his lifestyle and the job will hasten it, and the speed will be exponential as the exhaustion accumulates.
