Hi?
Here's my story:
*Raised in the South
*Raised Conservative and in a southern baptist church
*Went to Bible College
*Father's a pastor
*Realized I was indoctrinated
*Liberal
*Lifelong Repub until Obama
*Found this forum months ago and and thought it was "just a fringe site"
*Was really surprised when voices of reason popped up everywhere.
*Decided to start an account tonight.
Disclaimer: I don't love what I'm seeing in my party.
Hi everyone. Hope to get to know everyone individually.

(88 posts)I think I can be of some help in understanding the indoctrinated christians from the right side along with the flawed theology they place their faith in. I don't want to make this a religious debate, I'm sure there are some here who are religious, but I've spent many many years in very serious study on the subject and for the majority of my life it was my identity.

(88 posts)I'm still in the south and surrounded by people who it's a taboo subject to talk the way I talk about it with. So I let it be, and honestly there were enough years of religious apologetics, I've had my feel. What I do like talking about however, is the negative sides of religion and the many ways it can stunt our growth as humans. Maybe I'll stroll on over to the religion board and give it a gander.

(88 posts)Tom Baker or David Tennant? But by your question I'm pretty sure who's your doctor. lol. My apologies for being on the Tennant bandwagon.

(88 posts)Absolutely nothing at all. I liked Eccleston a lot and it seemed they were making his episodes for under $100 some of the times.

(11,949 posts)You are not the first convert here. I have only been a member for just over a year and only reading for a couple. Obama in the SC church was the final straw and removed the scales from my eyes.
Sounds like you have already changed your party affiliation which is kind of required here.
So if not, then please clear that up tonight. You can do it online. Again, welcome.
Et une question. Pourquoi les Francais? Etes-vous la Louisiane?
The99thTimeLord
(88 posts)No, I'm Gallifreyan.
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)PBS used to show it along with great shows like Faulty Towers and Reginald Perrin.
Your original post confused me. I thought is was pidgin French Creole like I heard growing up in South Louisiana!
Anyway, welcome.

(18,714 posts)"Allons-y" is French slang for "Lets Go". It's a phrase used by one of "the doctors" in the current DR WHO show. Could easily see how you'd get confused. I have family in LA and my wife is from BTR, and we have our share of Cajun French speakers in our family. I honestly wish we knew more, but it does come in handy when my wife and I want to be snarky at a dinner party..

(18,714 posts)But I love things about many of them.
So yeah, SBC...I meant Southern Baptist Church, as I grew up in a rural one, but Convention is just as appropriate since they're the real puppet masters.
I'm in Nashville! Small world! Welcome to DU!
The99thTimeLord
(88 posts)I'm assuming you were referring to the Southern Baptist Convention and not the Southern Baptist Church, one in the same either way really. But yeah, the Southern Baptist Convention and I are very familiar with one another. Wish I would have spent that time collecting pogs or something more fun.

(88 posts)I don't talk to them about any of my beliefs as to not rock the boat of my sweet 70 year old parents. And honestly, I don't need to. What I know now gives me peace, and while I wish that same peace for my family, perhaps they already have it, thought through errant beliefs. The problem is my family, like many others in the church, are good people. Great people even. They're just wrong about the thing they use as their very identity. But they are good people behind that.

(43,850 posts)I hate things they believed and believe. But it's not that simple. I think in many ways it gives us an advantage to know things aren't two dimensional. It can be hard though.

(11,949 posts)I must say the church I was raised in in the 70s was in a city and politics never came up. You could even find flexible minds in the seminaries. But then the whole moral majority thing started, the SBC was politicized and all moderates run out. Many of my church friends parents now attend liberal mainline churchs.
And many of my childhood church friends are nominal Christians at best if not outright agnostics. Those still in the SBC are flat out bigots.
If you are in NOLA I was raised an hour up the road.

(5,240 posts)I think things have heated up hear since Resident Rump was "elected". I try to ignore both the Bernie and Hillary bashing. No one candidate can be all things. There are things I like about Bernie and things I like about Hillary. I think there should be room for all sorts of progressive voices. There will be disagreements on specific issues, but a general agreement on progressive values.

You are definitely a conqueror. And they talk about liberal colleges and universities indoctrinating people and telling them how to think. I remember experiencing that in church. They hated me asking questions. As far as the party is concerned, there are divides that need to be addressed. But it's time to focus forward, learn from our mistakes and mobilize.
