if he doesn't get his way on the wall and Obamacare.
Yeah, about that. His party runs the White House, Congress, and the Supreme Court.
He'll be shutting down his own party.
Is he really that stupid?

Bannon wants to deconstruct the administrative state. Shutting down the government fits the bill nicely.
You said it, now I have to picture it.
He is that stupid.

(6,287 posts)that they are not interfering in any way with Mexico cutting a check for the wall. That's the way it was presented, that's the oft-stated policy position the people voted for, not the USA paying for the wall. Lather, rinse, repeat until Orange meltdown.

(39,120 posts)will be proof positive that they are utterly incompetent, and incapable of governing. We all know that already, but I wonder if it will sink in with others, like the so-called "disinterested" voters. Probably crickets, just like always. BTW, I'm supposed to start getting Social Security retirement in July. I'm sure they'll find a way to fuck that up. I decided not to roll the dice and wait until 66 because, knowing these assholes, they'll raise the age to 70, so I'm cashing in at 62 just in case they decide to screw us all.
murielm99
(32,972 posts)I have an aunt and uncle who did not wait. They are always short of money. They work part time, nasty jobs.
My uncle broke his pelvis recently, and this has only added to their woes.
Wait, if you can.

(26,070 posts)My co. reorganized and we are under a new VP who is trying to make a name for himself by making stupid risky moves that will show profit at first but will lose a lot of money by the end of the first year. He's relatively young and totally clueless, but thinks he's the smartest. He wants to outsource part of my dept. and I totally refuse to be the one that has to lay off people I've worked with for up to 18 years. There's several other moves he wants to make, all of which will hurt in the long run and could put us legally at risk. If I stay, I will be the person he yells at for the problems he created and will have to clean them up, even though I've opposed him. I'd also have to get re-certified and last time I worked until at least 10 pm 5 days a week and on the weekend as well. I am not in great health and just can't be sitting, studying, and working on my "builds" 13-15 hours a day for three months. Oh yeah, my bonuses will also be going away after July, again thanks to the new jerk. I will only lose $119/month by retiring at 65 vs. 66 but my life would be pure hell if I stayed. So, sayonara.

(39,120 posts)university, so I've been living off of that since 2015. This is extra. I'm far from rich, but I'm not hurting, either. I would NEVER be able to lie on Social Security alone. I'm sorry for your aunt & uncle--that has to be tough.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(28,493 posts)and you're still working, there's a limit on how much you can make, currently $16,920/year, $1410/month. If you go over that, you'll be dinged next year. Also, there's a huge permanent penalty by collecting early. If, instead, you wait until age 70, your SS amount will be nearly double what it is at 62.
And all it takes is a couple of years like the last two with no COLA, and you're living on a fixed income.
Most people do collect early, often because of not being able to find work as they get older. But if you're healthy, even a part time job might be a better choice than taking SS as soon as possible. It all depends on your specific circumstances.

(43,303 posts)down any inertia of any form of government in running his business out of the White House.
And I don't mean the idea of "running this country like a business."
I mean running his business.

(51,209 posts)and love shutdowns because a lot of workers like military and law enforcement still have to work without pay, on the hope that they can get paid later.
who really gets screwed are contract workers when the contracting company can't bill the government for work during a shutdown and decide not to pay their workers.

(3,148 posts)He knows he does have the votes from republicans to fund the wall. So he has come up with a dumb idea to blackmail Democrats into helping him. He is saying vote for my stupid wall or I will not do what I swore an oath to do. That is to faithfully execute the laws of the land like the affordable care act.
Even if Democrats were to go along with this foolishness it would only help the affordable care act temporarily, because Trump and his party are still actively trying to repel it.
He is to dumb to know he has no leverage.

(3,620 posts)When will everyone permanently *get* this?
Every Republican who thinks he/she can work with Trump is being an idiot and ignoring the past. The sooner people wise up about this, the sooner he can be stopped. This is something that will benefit both Dems and Reps.
