Source: Freep
" He) told the Child Protection investigator that if they knew what would come of it, this never would have happened," authorities wrote in a child protection services petition filed in Hennepin County, Minn.
The petition contradicts a widely held belief in the victim's family's Indian-Muslim community: that genital cutting is a closely guarded secret among only women, and that the men don't know about it.
" The father) knew about where they were because (his wife) texted him," states the petition, which offers fresh details in a case that has so far landed two doctors and a woman in jail on genital mutilation charges involving two Minnesota girls.
...
None of parents have been charged, though Minnesota authorities temporarily removed the girls from their homes. They are now back with their parents.

(9,265 posts)This is child abuse at its most heinous. We must send a message that this is NOT TOLERATED here. Period.
Legislation is needed.

Why on earth are those girls back with those parents?????

(13,466 posts)Would they have done this with non-religious parents that physically mutilated their child? I seriously doubt it. They should go to prison for a very long time.
We coddle all child abusing cults in this country, no matter the laws. Freedom of religion to harm innocents, or human rights? Which will it be?

(2,003 posts)With all due respect.
This is a direct consequence of a reluctance, mostly on the left, to judge other cultures. It is a direct consequence of holding Christianity accountable for their misdeeds while giving Islam a pass. Again, mostly on the left.
I see it here all the time. I loath hypocrisy and I will call it out whenever I witness it.

(13,466 posts)I have been in a LOT of fights on various liberal message boards about just this thing through the years, and the names I have been called..... And it isn't just one religion/group/culture that gets a pass; I see a lot of people on the internet in general being apologists for abusive groups IF US Christians oppose them.
I am not saying the person EL34X4 responded to (accurately IMO) is that kind of person, this discussion just makes me think of arguments I have been engaged in many times.

(2,003 posts)...the bizarre and completely one-sided solidarity that elements of the progressive Left maintain with Islam, perhaps the most un-progressive religion there is.
I see it here all the time, "Conservative Republicans would love to act this way once they get power" perpetrating a cartoonish stereotype of Christianity taken from a Margaret Atwood dystopia while completely ignoring that countless inhumanities that are perpetrated daily across the Muslim world. Real acts of barbarism; slavery, submission, mutilation, "honor" killings, gay men being hung from construction cranes in the town square.
If Islam ever gains a foothold of power here, we will not be driving cars with "Coexist" bumper stickers. We will not be celebrating gay pride parades in June. We will most certainly not be punishing doctors who cut off a girl's clitoris. We will be living in absolute fear, and it won't be from conservative Republicans.

(13,466 posts)But it is a relief to see you state the thoughts I don't share much.
I get scared I'm the only liberal who worries.

(26,060 posts)It makes me sick that supposed liberals give a pass for what are the desperate lives so many women live under Islam. I stopped worrying about being called names long ago.

(6,324 posts)I have noted that the same people who will be very vocal about an issue when it come to so-called Christian churches or people to account for harm to people's rights will stay very silent when far greater abuses happen in religions they see as minority or marginalized.
There is a deep hesitation in some to hold absuses in Islam accountable for fear of being labeled islamophobic even when they absolutely should be called out on it.
Heck, you can't even point out that the hijab is a deeply oppressive patriarchal symbol forced on 99.9% of the women who must wear it without any choice without lots of people screaming at you about how some tiny sliver of them choose it and we should respect their diversity on a deeply progressive forum like this one. But if a fundementalist Baptist church put out a statement saying women should wear only long modest skirts and dresses there would be a 500+ post long discussion in here about how bad it was.
The parents should be in prison right next to the doctors who performed the procedure. All children should be taken away from these abusers. This shouldn't even be up for discussion and wouldn't be if these parents were Christian.

This "cultural practice" needs to end. It comes from men, it has to land on their heads, so to speak.
