I'm leaving on a jet plane,

but I do know when I'll be back again.

If you don't see my screen name here on DU for the next few days, I want to let you know that I'll be out of touch, beginning tomorrow AM. After missing my trip at Christmas, I'll heading out to California to visit with my 92-year-old parents on their citrus and avocado farm. At their age, they abandoned the Internet about 10 years ago, so I'll have no access to wi-fi while I'm there. In fact, even my cell phone doesn't get an adequate signal out on the farm to use data services.

But, no matter - I could use a break from a constant connection to the world. Probably, we all could. I'll take the time to listen to my parents' concerns and to do whatever I can to help them while I'm there. Even though I call them every afternoon to check in with them, it will be good to have more time to really understand how they are feeling and doing at age 92. I'll also have opportunities to talk with my two siblings, who still live in the same town as they do.

These are often difficult visits. But, they're important ones, since any visit could be the last. I know that. My parents know that. They're still living on their own in the farmhouse they build back in the early 1970s. Probably, they should not be living on their own, but that is a decision they must make. Perhaps we'll discuss that on this trip. Perhaps. I don't know.

Anyhow, I'll be back at my keyboard next Tuesday. Until then, I'll keep my fingers crossed in hope that The Donald does not do anything rash or so stupid it threatens us all. I'll rest my typing fingers and give my thumb joints a break from banging on the space bar hundreds of times each day. I'll try not to lose sight of what is going on in the world, so that I can return ready to continue the discussion.

I'll be around the rest of the day today, but there's a lot to do. See you all soon.

from California to help look after her parents. Due to the disparity of home prices between CA and MN, it was a one-way move. Even though both of her parents are now gone, moving back the California is economically out of the question.

I'll enjoy visiting with my folks. It's always good to do that. I worry about them, though, of course.

They've been teaching me important things all through my life. I wonder what I'll learn this time. My sympathies are with you.
