Donald Trump's "America First" budget proposal for 2018 puts working-class communities last, calling for the elimination of several federally supported, independent, cultural institutions, including the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
IMLS helps fund literacy and technology programs in 123,000 libraries and about 35,000 museums across the US -- all with a budget of just $230 million, which is about .05 percent of the entire federal budget.
IMLS is currently funded through a continuing resolution that expires on April 28, 2017, and additional legislation must be passed for funding to continue.
If Trump's budget passes, the cuts will have a devastating impact on those who utilize public libraries in rural areas and poor urban communities in particular.

(4,516 posts)In the early 70's my parents, at the urging of the church, burned all my books. After that ANY book that came into the house was subject to the same. If it had not been for the library and a few stealthy hiding places, I would never have graduated HS. Methods have changed but the goal is still the same. Keep the people ignorant enough, long enough, to build a slave class.

(68,868 posts)people in rural areas have earned whatever negative consequences befall them.
we're not all in this together anymore.
So, only city residents should be able to use those libraries. People living in Trump country will just have to make do with Fox News.

(13,390 posts)A small urban area like mine has a small tax base and not a lot of money to go around.
It serves a city of just over 100,000 and several very small locales. My city is one of very few in my state that did not vote for 45. I'm not sure about the surrounding towns, but it doesn't matter. They should have access to the library. Particularly when there is limited internet access in some of those areas.
I am astonished by how cold-blooded self proclaimed liberals can be.

(68,868 posts)Instead of firing cannons at Fort Sumter, they decided to inflict Donald Tr*mp on us.
the last thing we want to do is reward such behavior by fighting for their well-being.
this country will move forward only when the Tr*mpers suffer, and suffer hard, because of his actions.
Only then, maybe, will they decide that the well-being of their families is more important than prosecuting their cultural grievances. Because obviously the well-being of people who aren't uneducated, white, Christian, and heterosexual means exactly nothing to those folk.
So, do I think people in blue-voting areas should give "free stuff" to Tr*mpers? fuck no.

(13,390 posts)Real people who have children and hopes for them. It may make you feel better to consider them of no value and only worthy of the worst that come to them, but it's actually just venomous hate very much like what we hear from 45's supporters.
geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)in a perfect world no one would have to suffer. Since the dumb fuck trash of America decided to install Trump as our President, however, there will be suffering--it is unavoidable.
Now, it is pretty damn obvious who ought to bear the burden of his misfeasance and malfeasance--those who lined up behind him as an unthinking, proudly ignorant mob.

(11,686 posts)I was thinking about that yesterday. I see library's getting closed and books at store going up really high. So, poor people who can not afford to buy books will no longer be able to read for either pleasure or for study. I suppose Devilos has something to do with this. She and the rest of this administration are bent on making America uneducated.

Perhaps you can tell your father to not cut funding for libraries and to read some books about history while you're at it. Thanks!

Your dad is trying to defund IMLS which provides essential funding and guidance to all public libraries. We don't need your honor. #saveimls https://twitter.com/IvankaTrump

(2,682 posts)-- seems that whatever she praises is the next thing her father attacks. Libraries, she praised them, he will cut funding for them. In Germany, she got booed for saying her father was supportive of women's issues, and yesterday, he called for the elimination of the department that works on women's rights world-wide. Yup, she is a harbinger of nasty acts by her father. It leaves only the question of whether she is lying or is stupid. Either way, she is (fill in the blank)!

(12,448 posts)Never mind that it's horribly short-sighted for obvious, economic reasons as well as being contrary to just plain common sense. Someone like Dump appeals to the uneducated and badly educated. He talks their language; a language consisting of approximately 200 words. He doesn't read but instead compulsively watches TV.
