...that even now that they know he lied to them they still support him.
This tells me they are not necessarily ignorant so much as they are malicious, vindictive, and spiteful.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised considering they voted for him knowing his misogyny and that he mocked the handicapped.
These aren't Christians. No, these are vile cretins for whom the word "deplorables" is much too kind.

(367 posts)Greater is that they are looking for someone who appears to fill their "ideal" of success, strength and truth. Many jumped in through fear rather than wanting to discover for themselves facts.
Edit: 'jumped in' meaning at some point began following national issues after feeling fear as the 2008 recession and growing political environment (elections, etc) as they wanted assurance the government was working. I hear many in such position say they realized (after listening to Faux news) that the government had been "hijacked by the Democrats" and felt "we have to save America".

And no, it is NOT half the country. We haven't had a truly "majority" president or government in a while, if ever. What we get, cycle after cycle, is a group of people in government who might get more votes, but seldom get a true 50% of eligible voters. We need more people to get over their discouragement and get out and vote, and pay attention between elections.
Trump's poll numbers are basically the same as they were on election night. And it isn't a majority.

(56,828 posts)Franken would have a daily segment with a good friend of his that was a dedicated Rush Limbaugh fan. The guy would come on and Al would debunk Rushs latest talking point as a lie, half truth or weasel words (something taken out of context, I think). However, the guy kept listening to Rush faithfully even though Al would debunk him. Finally, a frustrated Franken challenged his friend to find anything in the past month that Rush said that was 100% true they guy could not do it, even though Al gave him a week. The friend then responded that it didnt matter that Rush lied all the time he just liked Rush and his talking points and the attitude in which they were delivered.

(5,995 posts)They like to feel the vindication of their prejudice that Trump's election granted their hatred. They feel that now they can tell everyone how their innate superiority must be acknowledged and respected without question.
To them the only truth is that they have been right all along.
Where Trump will fail is when they realize that they will lose as much or more than the ones they hate.

(3,568 posts)and I think you're exactly right. Facts, truth, and reason really seem to have zero effect on them! The age of "Idiocracy" is upon us and I say that in all seriousness. Trump is going to wind up worse than W ever was, it's just a matter of time.

(81,267 posts)Ever since rush limbaugh told them "you don't even have to think! I'LL do the thinking FOR you!" - they've had a free pass to ignore facts, ignore reality, ignore learning, ignore anything but the baloney from inside the bubble in which they insist on living. I remember being shocked motionless when I heard him say that on the radio, which I actually did one day, years ago. They even have a response to that when you try to question them: "I know what I know."
Gee, don't know why, but the word "deplorable" comes to mind.

(8,133 posts)false "fact" that "those brown/black people" are getting this fictional money that should be going to them. They hate us intellectual "smarty pants" elitists or independent-thinking people who refuse to succumb and who look at them with disdain. It's the "regular dunkin donut coffee drinkers" vs. all of us (mostly imagined) Starbucks latte drinkers. Maybe you can now add "smoothie drinkers" and "organic food eating" people to that.

Never realizing that they have 'submitted' to the authoritarian ....
They get off on the visions of authoritarian oppression & suppression that dance in their heads...
Yet if you ask them if they like it when government tells them what to do/ forces them to do something
Its all a macho fuck you ... hell no... nobody tells me wut to do... blah blah
They think the authoritarian oppresses & suppresses in their name/ on their behalf..
When in reality the authoritarian does so only for himself .... and sees all his loyal supporters as submissive dumbasses who deserve to get fucked over.... soon it will be their turn.

(2,146 posts)it's deeper than that and the problem is the TV. Most people will sit and watch it, which encourages non thinking, so they will accept whatever the TV tells them. TV is geared towards a 7th grade level education, so a person gets used to thinking on that level, and it becomes the norm for communication. Plus, TV shows are all about conflict / resolution and most of them are what I call "comic book" shows, especially action shows. Gawd, what cliches, and the viewer buys them and the simplistic thinking behind them. So it doesn't take long before the mind sort of goes blank from the endless stream of reality avoiding entertainment. And them a person would rather sit in front of the tube and be entertained and not have to think or participate in the worlds around them....

I know for a fact. I am a middle age white guy who drives a truck, has a boat, owns guns, hunt, fish and sometime wear boots. Oh, and I live in the south.
I am surprised the number of times in bars(when the wife works late I tend to eat in the bar section of restaurants...I do not hang out in real bars) someone in my 'group' automatically assumes I voted for Trump. I usually keep quite until they piss me off so much I quietly tip my hand. That is usually about the time they say something like, "yeah, Trump is not doing just what he said, but he really pissing of the liberals and blacks." By no means verbatim but you get the gist.
That's when I tell them I am a Social Democrat and became one after spending months in Europe and having it shown to me that the Republican Party fed me a line of shit for 30 years and that in many ways the Europeans live just as happy and more secure lives than most Americans. Every time I have said something like that they are speechless and look like a pole-axed cow. Wish I could have it on film. And then they always back off fast with a weak attempt at a Parthian shot.

They simply cannot, will not even spend a second considering they may have made a mistake. They block their ears and eyes and personal morals and quickly turn on Fox News or Rush to drown out any facts that might get in the way of that. Being "right", all the time, is their gift from God. They simply cannot be wrong or it would mean that there is no God.
