She forbids me from posting her photos anywhere, but I don't think this counts! Don't tell. Still in love.

(26,447 posts)For years, I was an airline pilot and she travelled a lot, so we did not get on each others' nerves at home. Then, in 2008, I started doing the wilderness fire lookout gig. And did that until 2016 (I am taking the 2017 fire season off). So again, separation. Works wonders!
When we both retire, for good, I'm sure we will kill each other.

(15,700 posts)about absence working wonders! My husband I will celebrate 36 years of married life in June. For each of us, it is a second marriage and we already had 28 years cumulative (15 for him; 13 for me) of married life with those spouses. We didn't even meet until those marriages were over and have also remained on good terms with the exes with whom we share children.
We are both very independent. We each had been single parents for a couple years before meeting. But even when we are apart, we are devoted to each other. He is also literally my best friend. Right now, he prefers to live in the US and I prefer to live in Switzerland although we spent the first 22 years of our marriage together, mostly on a daily basis. He just feels more comfortable in an anglophone environment in his silver years. I flourish in linguistic diversity.
We each travel to and spend several months in each other's residence so are able to experience the benefits of both countries and we enjoy traveling to new countries together. We each have many interests and friends on both sides of The Pond, although our children and grandchildren live in various parts of the US. In this way, they are able to visit here and learn about the world outside the US firsthand. In fact, one DIL and our 10-year-old granddaughter will visit this summer, while my husband is also here. With electronic communication like Skype, Google+, Duo, etc., we are all able to remain in touch - on a daily basis, if need be.
Our lifestyle doesn't work for everyone and yes, we are only able to afford it because of good career decisions, hard work, good luck and financial planning on both our parts - even though we are nowhere near the very privileged ones and never even want to be. All grandchildren except for the three youngest have completed or are in the process of completing university educations, in large part with our financial assistance as well as their own hard work. We have set up 529 accounts for the three youngest into which we contribute each month and hope that we will be around to see them as adults.
We have no idea how much longer we will be able to live like this - given our comparatively advanced ages and my real fear that Trump and his ilk could destroy the civilized world as we know it. But we will continue to enjoy life as long and as best as we can.
We wish that ALL could have the same opportunity to live their lives as happily and as fully as possible!

(20,056 posts)That's an amazing milestone to reach. That you're still in love is the reason you've made it this far in your lives together.
May the two of you enjoy many, many more beautiful anniversaries together!
P.S. The love of my life and myself just celebrated our anniversary yesterday. You inspire me as to what our future still holds.

(11,005 posts)For starters, DemoTex, I LOVE your photographs. I'm always green with envy, and wanting to be in all the places where you take your fantastic photos.
Then you tell us about 43 years of marriage. That is something to celebrate in today's world. My parents made it just shy of 66 years, and if not for their deaths, they would still be going strong.
My Dad had a business that ended up being a family business. So we all worked there, including my Mom. But they still had time away from each other. Add to that the fact that my Dad was a workaholic. We thought he'd be dead six months after retirement, as he wouldn't know what to do with himself. My Mom thought he'd be following her around all day long.
But he found this silly game where you hit a ball and chase it for hours on end, trying to hit it into a tiny hole many yards down a fairway. And my Mom finally had time to discover the artistic side of herself.
So keep enjoying the years together. And when you truly are living in the same place 24/7, remember this. HOBBIES.
Congratulations on 43, and may many more years filled with love be ahead of you.

(60,436 posts)In a way, we have a 43rd anniversary too this year. We've "only" been married 35 years, but we met in a cabaret in Berlin 43 years ago, and have been together since about 48 hours after that.
Go ahead and post a photo--just don't tell her. That's what I do with my wife. She looks so much better than I do, it saves people's screens from cracking, which is what happens when it's only me in the photo.

As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
