A government-sponsored study published recently in The Open Neurology Journal concludes that marijuana provides much-needed relief to some chronic pain sufferers and that more clinical trials are desperately needed, utterly destroying the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agencys (DEA) classification of the drug as having no medical uses.
While numerous prior studies have shown marijuanas usefulness for a host of medical conditions, none have ever gone directly at the DEAs placement of marijuana atop the schedule of controlled substances. This study, sponsored by the State of California and conducted at the University of California Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research, does precisely that, driving a stake into the heart of Americas continued war on marijuana users by calling the Schedule I placement simply not accurate and not tenable.
Reacting to the study, Paul Armentano, director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), told Raw Story that the study clearly proves U.S. drug policy is neither based upon nor guided by science.
In fact, it is hostile to science, he said. And despite the Obama Administrations well publicized 2009 memo stating, Science and the scientific process must inform and guide decisions of my Administration, there is little to no evidence indicating that the federal governments See no evil; hear no evil approach to cannabis policy is not changing any time soon.

(24,254 posts)Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants
Abstract
Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and HIV dementia. Nonpsychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidoil, are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses useful in the method of the present invention. A particular disclosed class of cannabinoids useful as neuroprotective antioxidants is formula (I) wherein the R group is independently selected from the group consisting of H, CH.sub.3, and COCH.sub.3. ##STR1##

Prohibition is a failed public policy and cannabis and hemp can save the world.

(785 posts)I am sure that further studies will prove many more uses and benefits of drugs derived from marijuana. Even straight off the plant marijuana could replace many high priced medications for a wide variety of conditions and do so with fewer negative side effects and risks. This is indisputable. The facts don't matter. Nor does it matter that most Americans favor decriminalization or legalization. What matters is how much money you can throw at an election to direct the outcome. Pharmaceuticals are flush with cash. Do you think Obama or even the Democratic "leadership" (and I use that term loosely) will risk the wrath of Big Pharma before a major election? No. That isn't going to happen.

(60,212 posts)OTC sleeping pills make me groggy the whole next day, and I have heard horror stories about Ambien.
A few months ago I made a tincture with weed, catnip, and chamomile and I have never slept better in my life. I wake up the next morning and feel actually refreshed. I don't go through the day in a burned out haze like I did before.
I am going through the cheerios awfully fast though.

(5,198 posts)it sounds very calming--and you made me look up cannabis tinctures. I have been making my own cannabis oil for lymphoma, which is in my digestive system (so I think of eating it as treating the cancer topically). It is still helping me keep it under control, and I am very grateful for this plant.
I want to look up which cannabinoids are freed up with alcohol and which ones need oil to be released.Somehow i got it stuck in my head that oil was needed to free up the cancer fighting components, but I am open to new research. Perhaps both methods are beneficial!
Good Dreams XemaSab!

Especially informative is the interviews with him and his wife in "The New Settler" newsletter (issue 148).
Also look for a paper he wrote titled "Cannabis as a Unique Functional Food".

(5,198 posts)and know you have done a good thing today waddirum!!!! I can't believe I haven't heard of this. I hope no one minds if I post this video here:
I will continue to look into raw cannabis--I have been eating more raw foods so this makes total sense.

(979 posts)I was pretty blown away when I first came across this information. And to think of all of the fan leaf that I used to just throw away, because I didn't know better.
What I've gathered from my research is that there are so many more cannabinoids in the plant than just the THC which gets you high. Just as important is the THC-acid (from the raw plant), CBD, CBD-acid (again raw), CBN, CBG, and many others.
Best of luck with your health (and happiness).

(5,178 posts)Now is not the time to be pushing alternatives to GSK's proven track record of valuable prescription pharmaceuticals. We must rally and support them in this time of need by keeping the devils weed illegal and trusted new chemical compounds that are brought to market in four months that make your toenails fall off the law of the land. You know, for the kids.
