(10,001 posts)Trump has been successful in his nominations but not in his policies. His threats have already become tiresome and are largely being ignored. The only policy he has devoted his little time and lack of energy to is enriching himself and family. He will be allowed to succeed in that as long as he signs the legislation the GOP congress gives him.

(180 posts)If he predicts a coup attempt then I would believe him. I don't know if Trump would be successful but Snyder says in his latest book to not rely on our institutions to protect us from tyrrany; it is our institutions that need to be protected

(2,073 posts)One thing Trump has done well: woke a lot of otherwise apathetic people up. But his personality disorder is such that he can't see it. He chooses to surround himself with an ever shrinking number of sycophants which gives him the illusion of majority support.
So yes, he will "try to" consolidate power (he already is) but will fail spectacularly.

(42,610 posts)And his failure to elaborate even a little on his claim that Trump will stage his own "Reichstag fire" is telling. What sort of event? Will, like the actual Reichstag fire, allow Trump to round up his political opposition? Not. Going. To. Happen.
Snyder may be a respected historian, but he sounds like someone who has bought into too many conspiracy theories.
