Trump Doubles Down On Claim That Jackson Could Have Prevented Civil War

By CAITLIN MACNEAL Published MAY 2, 2017 7:28 AM

After praising Andrew Jackson in a Monday interview with the Washington Examiner, President Donald Trump on Monday night repeated his claim that Jackson could have prevented the Civil War.

Trump made to sure to mention that Jackson died years before the Civil War began, perhaps because it was unclear from his initial comments that he knew Jackson was no longer alive when the Civil War began.

“Had Andrew Jackson been a little later, you wouldn’t have had the Civil War,” Trump told the Washington Examiner earlier on Monday. “He was a very tough person, but he had a big heart.”

“He was really angry that he saw what was happening with regard to the Civil War, he said, ‘There’s no reason for this,’” Trump added. “People don’t realize, you know, the Civil War, you think about it, why? People don’t ask that question, but why was there the Civil War? Why could that one not have been worked out?”

2. everybody in politics saw it coming! our entire pre-civil war history was about preventing it.

1789 to 1865 was practically one long series of compromises in an effort to prevent secession and civil war.

next donnie will argue that jackson *did* prevent civil war; after all, it didn't happen on his watch!

as for jackson's legendary anger, it seemed mostly directed at native americans, not against avoiding civil war.
and certainly not against slavery, as he was a slaver himself.

He cannot claim to be a revisionist when he never learned the most basic history in the first place.

Then Trump will tell us how Custer would have survived Little Bighorn had the UN not stopped the 7th Cavalry Regiment from bombing the shit out of them. (Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes)

6. Trump is exercising damage control on his anachronistic placement of Jackson in the Civil War era.

Trump is tying to spin his way out of his blunder by suggesting that his initial reference to Jackson's anger was with regard to Jackson having a belief that such a war was going to occur.

Trump would do well to contemplate the wise words of an the actual Civil War statesman who commented on fooling some or all of the people some or all of the time.

Only idiots like him would think, "Yeah, that's true. I've never seen that question asked, 'why could that not have been worked out?'" As others on the thread have stated everything possible was done to prevent the war. As Lincoln stated in his editorial response to the New York Tribune, “I would save the Union. … If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it; and if could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it. … What I do about Slavery and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save this Union.”

Everything leading up to the Civil War was a balancing act to try to prevent the conflagration while not killing the soul of the country by allowing slavery to expand and stand as an American institution. It is a very complicated and nuanced situation that demanded the best of the leaders of the time. Many times they failed. Ultimately, there would be no stopping the war. Jackson was a Unionist, that much is true, but there was no way in hell that he would have prevented the war.

Again, the problem is that Trump is intellectually and academically, an idiot. He does not comprehend complexity and nuance. He does not have the vocabulary to express these situations in all of their variables.

make the Civil War inevitable by opposing the abolitionists "who sought to address the crisis of slavery. He even opposed those who sought compromise, like Henry Clay"

I'd bet money that Trump would have slaves of his own today if he could. That would make him feel soooo superior.
