Glenn Greenwald, who always responds to Trump's bad news with an Obama-sucks or Hillary-sucks reaction, called Stephen Colbert homophobic for joking that Trump and Putin (who shelters his good friend Snowden) were lovers.

I'll defend Colbert on almost any point, but not this one.

There were many other ways to call out the Puppet-In-Chief, and he ought to have used one. For crying out loud, his lines are written in advance.

My instinct is to trust Colbert, but he's not a monolith and I could certainly be persuaded that he is wrong here.

Of course, Greenwald is an ass for going after Colbert for this one statement rather than going after Trump for every statement.


It also occurs to me that DU fave Bill Maher has made numerous transphobic and misogynist comments and has argued in favor of statutory rape on more than occasion, yet DU by and large gives him a pass. Not me, (and not you, I suspect), but if I'm going to call Maher out for his comments then perhaps I should hold Colbert to a similar standard.

13. Ok, I've done some further thinking...

On FB I follow several local LGBT groups, and across the board the commenters (i.e., members of the respective groups) are declaring this a non-issue. As one put it "He didn't say anything that we in the community haven't already said."

Certainly I don't hold these posters responsible for the views of the entire LGBT community, but as an outsider and (hopefully) ally, I am happy to follow their lead. If they see and accept Colbert's joke as a joke, then that's probably good enough for me.
