Nancy Pelosi Is the Most Effective Member of the Resistence

If you think the Democrats are pure of heart, I have a bridge to sell you. President Donald Trump is, as I take delight in repeating as often as I can, a lying, thieving, philandering sadist, and the Democrats do come off as saints by comparison. But let’s not fool ourselves. The people arguing with me about what to do with the white working class are the same people who’d argue, rightly, that soft racism and casual sexism are everywhere, even among the ranks of the Democratic Party.

They are right, and it’s this subliminal bigotry that’s keeping us from seeing what’s happening. Fact is, the Democrats are doing remarkable well, all things considered. They are united. They have blocked Trump where they can. They exploited and exposed his weakness and the disarray of the Republicans to extract major concessions.

But we can’t see this because we are not giving credit to the one person doing the most, and we are not giving her credit, because she’s a woman. That’s what I mean when I say subliminal bigotry is preventing us from seeing. That’s what I mean when I say the Democratic Party is not pure of heart. Our sin is finding us out.

Of course, I’m talking about Nancy Pelosi. The party she is leading is not in power but not in tatters either. It is in fact flexing muscle. Not only that, the House Minority Leader is providing a narrative for moving ahead and retaking the House. We should all focus on what’s working, and not on past grievances no matter how painful.

I've always hated seeing her dumped on. She's shrewd and savvy and she was a VERY effective Speaker of the House. Nice to hear it pointed out by various talking heads that she NEVER brought a bill up to a vote if she wasn't sure it had the votes to pass. NEVER got herself caught flat-footed. Except once.

The ONLY time she ever HAS ever been caught flat-footed was immediately after the 9/11 attacks, when, as a House leader, she was physically lifted up, under the armpits, by scrambling security agents, and hustled out of the Capitol building - in such haste that she lost both of her high-heeled shoes.

Or send in that mail-in ballot - ON TIME. And ANY TIME someone you don't know or trust tells you when the election is, get a second opinion to make sure you don't miss it. There are GOP schemes, and operatives, who do that - spread the word or send notices around promoting the election, deliberately including the wrong date.

There's absolutely no excuse for sitting things out during the upcoming midterms. Or, Hell, ANY midterms. ANY elections - PERIOD. You have to vote in all of them. Your vote and your voice are both needed - in EVERY election.

I'm Disappointed in my Party Leadership... Again

This shit matters. Womens' rights over our own bodies are ALWAYS the fucking bargaining chip to "build a bigger coalition" or "get the unhappy Middle Americans" into the tent and FUCK THAT NOISE.

I respect her accomplishments and she has many leadership triumphs and she's working in a difficult environment.

But on this, she is WRONG. And it will harm the Party, deeply, in the long run.

That is all.

I'm sure Nancy does what she can, but there are times I think it's better to stand on principle even if it cost you in the short run. In the long run we need to need to rebuild the party to fit the times. Quite simply FDR is pretty irrelevant to todays younger voters. It's almost like Republicans talking about being the party of Lincoln. Times change. what was ok in the 90's won't fly now.
We can either blame others for our failures or learn from the experience.

Republicans do compromise among themselves and sometimes not so much.

As to your list, I agree with all of it.

That said, I don't think it can be done in one fell swoop. My opinion is that we need to work towards these goals and compromise within the Democratic Party is essential to move towards them.

to insist that Nancy Pelosi isn't a fighter and good leader of the house dems when she's one of the most effective ones ever. It's out of touch to think Gabbard, the darling of right wing media, is someone we should look to as a leader. And you do know that Sanders isn't in the pink of youth at 75, nor a dem?

We need more leaders in the House, like Nancy Pelosi, who agree with the majority of Americans that cannabis should be legal.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/06/politics/nancy-pelosi-prop-64-pot/

Unfortunately when we have prominent Democrats claiming to speak for our party who go to the NY times and give rambling interviews talking about how the "solution to the marijuana crisis" is to put pot smokers in prison, it damages our brand.

Not the voters, of course- look at Mass. and Maine. But if you compare the behavior of the legislature in MA- which has done everything it can to delay implementation of recreational legalization- to that of the legislature combined with Gov. Kate Brown in Oregon, which implemented early recreational sales through existing medical dispensaries before the full recreational apparatus could come online-- it's like night and day.

The simple fact of the matter is, it's an issue that polls at increasingly popular levels, and we would be fools not to take it up. It is tailor made for us to exploit the divisions in the GOP between their jesusbagger control freak fingerwaggers and their libertarian wing.

For whatever reason some people seem to treat it like it's an irritating distraction, here, but the polls don't lie.

Gavin Newsom, to his credit, has been out ahead of it for some time. I don't know how many specific statements on the matter Senator Harris has made, I know she avoided talking about it because of her prior gig as CA AG- that said I am reasonably certain she is committed to defending the will of the voters of California via prop. 64. Feinstein, OTOH, is a freaking disaster on the topic.

Here are the Senators that signed the letter to Sessions asking that he respect the will of the voters in recreational legal states: Warren, Murkowski, Murray, Wyden, Merkley, Cantwell, Markey, Schatz, Masto, Booker, Bennet.

https://www.scribd.com/document/340769226/Letter-from-U-S-Senators-to-Attorney-General-Jeff-Sessions-regarding-recreational-marijuana

Booker and Gillibrand were both involved in the CARERS act, too, I believe to their credit.

Like a cop telling a criminal, "I'm not going to arrest you for anything." The Bush crime family got off scott-free because she was too timid to investigate.

It was, perhaps, one of the biggest graffes in US political history. Pelosi embolden the Trump people to rob Hillary of the presidency, know they could get away with anything!

Looking back on her leadership during the ACA period also reminded me how clutch she can be.

In all fairness, it is much easier to be the minority leader with a guy like Trump leading the other side. He is the best uniter and GOTVer the Dems have seen in my lifetime. I mean we all hated GWB, but not this hard and this early.
