As they hooted derisively at their Republican colleagues on Thursday after a narrow, party-line approval of legislation to roll back the Obama-era health care law, Democrats glimpsed the mirror image of their own politically disastrous health care experience. They also saw a prime opportunity to avenge their ugly 2010 loss and possibly recapture the House majority.
I think they are staring death in the face, Representative Gerald E. Connolly, Democrat of Virginia, said about the political prospects of dozens of House Republicans who were persuaded to back the bill by Republican leaders anxious to deliver a legislative win. They asked their vulnerable members to take an enormous gamble and risk on an act of faith that I guarantee will not pay off.
Relieved Republicans celebrated on the House floor and at the White House and said they had been in danger of retaliation from their own conservative base if they had not delivered on the pledge to repeal the law they had been promising to strike from the books for seven years. They say their candidates will have the experience and resources to fight off Democratic challengers.

(42,278 posts)The mission statement of the Republican party.
I would love to see that on bumper stickers all over America. Even red state dimwits should be able to read that much.

(18,837 posts)Face it, there's nothing we know today that we did not know during the primaries, the general election, and well before that.
The people who voted for Trump turned a blind eye to all of it, believed his promises on health care, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.
Now we have "frightened" red-hat folks, and for some of them, the gravity of this still hasn't sunk in.
This was all dog-and-pony show. The path to this ending up on Trump's desk for signature is long and twisted.
"Their own conservative base" is so effing clueless that they see this as something more than a "symbolic victory."
This won't hurt Republicans until Republican voters get hurt. When they can no longer get medical treatment, or can't get it at all, then they'll get angry, and then Trump will tell them it's all Obama's fault.

(2,297 posts)The vote was not a big deal. Trump has numbed America to Trump. This includes all sides. Except for the extreme few percent, most just look out the corner of their eye and go along with their life. I was at the gym yesterday. Normally when a Trump story comes on, people get vocal. Yesterday, everyone ignored it.

They are dancing for their base with no real expectation of Success.

(5,751 posts)and doesn't care what he wins. But this will be a good question for press conferences for some time. Basically, you told the Australian prime minister that Australia has better heath care than the US. If you believe that, why don't you fight for a system like they have?

I hope they enjoyed their beer bash (likely taxpayer funded?) Next election should be EPIC, if the low intelligence people who voted for Agent Orange are affected, and realize what happened to their healthcare.

(2,297 posts)With different government, taxes, big pharma, doctor salaries, etc. Changing healthcare alone does not take into account how it fits in with the remainder of the system. I could fix US healthcare in a minute if we dumped big pharma and US salaries. Ie the Cuban healthcare system. Which is vastly superior to Australia and the US.

By the way... Where does it say anything about insurance companies in the Constitution?

(45,380 posts)a lot of people like the patient protections and coverage they've been getting and know someone who has benefitted. They just don't like the Obama part. A lot of Trumpsters had lost their jobs but were able to get insurance through the ACA, especially if this happened later in life before they qualify for Medicare, or if someone in their family has pre-existing conditions. The success stories need to keep coming and gain some media coverage.
The GOP should just make some superficial edits, rename it Trumpcare, and call it a win.
