I watched the "Newtown" documentary on Netflix last night.
It was, as I expected, extremely emotional affecting. Almost five years later and I still don't know if there was any major news event that bothered me quite like the Sandy Hook massacre. The entire story, and the heartbreaking aftermath, remains a blow to the gut.
Most of the documentary focuses around parents of several of the victims as well as a few other people in the community who were directly involved in the tragedy. It's not overly political but the efforts (tragically failed at the federal level) to enact even modest gun control measures are addressed at various points throughout the film.
As an aside, there is some brief footage of President Obama speaking as events played out. As if the subject matter of the documentary wasn't brutal enough, my sadness was compounded by the fact that that man who spoke so eloquently and beautifully and honestly throughout and made such a connection with the people involved in the struggle is no longer our President.
And seeing him just made me realize how much I miss him as President and how much he brought to the office.
I simply cannot imagine that thing that currently calls himself the president having to deal with a situation like Sandy Hook. I don't want to imagine it. I cannot believe he'd be in the least bit emotionally sincere or even attempt to genuinely care about the situation. God forbid we're ever faced with something like Sandy Hook while he sits in office. We could expect no dignity, no honor in such a tragedy. Only a disgrace.
Our country lost so, so much January 20th.
