America's Beloved Millionaires

Here in America, millionaires aren't despised the way they are in Europe; here, they are beloved. You can hardly name a celebrity who's not a millionaire. Baseball heroes. Popular singers. Actors and actresses. Nearly everybody in the Senate is a millionaire; and a fair number in the House as well.

The list goes on and on. Entrepreneurs. Doctors. TV show emcees. Americans love rich people, and aren't about to change because there's an election coming up.

Derek Jeter lives here.

in 2011 there were nearly 6 million households with investable assets at $1M or more - 1 in 20 households. That does not include the the value of held real estate.

Do you have a link for the European feelings toward millionaires? I lived there for 3 years and never had that feeling.

I don't believe that an election campaign premised on class resentments will succeed in America, where we love money and respect people who have lots of it. Here, socialism is a bad word; we would never elect an avowed socialist like France's Francois Hollande.

Did you know that Tom Delay has never spent a day in prison? In Europe, criminals go to jail.

I didn't believe there were any million-dollar private homes in Van Nuys until I Googled "Van Nuys real estate." http://www.trulia.com/for_sale/Van_Nuys,CA/

Well, shut my mouth. There are some pricey places in Van Nuys after all. Who knew?

Resource hogs like the one pictured are likely climate controlled year round yet the vast majority of their enclosed space is no doubt rarely used. How much time has anyone spent in the room behind that little window way off to the left? Or any other? Like gas guzzlers on the highway wasting gasoline and creating unnecessary demand that drives up prices for everyone, these resource hogs waste trees and other natural resources to build and maintain and create perpetual gas, electric, and water waste that drives up prices for sensible people and unnecessarily depletes resources.

The pursuit of grotesque excess is the root of all evil.

But those of us who don't want to be ruled and lifted out of the burden of actual "thinking" are eclipsed by the hordes of screeching idiots latching on to anything that provides a "guarantee," especially religious nonsense, which, of course, can "guarantee" anything and get away with it. Legally, and tax-free. That needs to stop.
