Man suspected of politically-charged attack at Transy appears in court
Mitchell Adkins appeared in Fayette District Court on Monday for an arraignment.
Police charged Adkins, 19, of Cincinnati, with first-degree and fourth-degree assault, as well as three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment. On Monday, Attorney Jim Lowry entered a not guilty plea on Adkins's behalf in front of Judge Bruce Bell.
Witnesses say on Friday morning, Adkins went into the coffee shop at Transylvania University asking people about their political affiliations. They say Adkins then began attacking and injuring two students, one of whom suffered serious injuries.
Since that attack, WKYT has learned Adkins wrote a politically-charged post on Buzzfeed back in 2015 in which he claimed that liberal arts colleges discriminate against conservatives. Police say on Friday Adkins, who is a former Transy student, was armed with a machete and other knives.
