Kasich Should Run A Primary Campaign Against Trump

If Trump is still in office in 2020, we should hope to see John Kasich, the Republican Governor of Ohio, run a Primary Challenge against Trump.

Moderate Republicans might rally to Kasich, and Trump may have done some more terrible sh!t to own up to by then that alienates him from more Republicans.

Hopefully we can get Republicans to abandon Trump. Not that I want Kasich over a Democrat in the White House. Still, I would rather risk losing to a Moderate Republican like Kasich than four more years of this incompetent narcissist and his awful enablers (Pence, Bannon, Spicer, etc.).

Kasich was just on Real Time with Bill Maher and said a lot of sane and smart things about Medicaid and Health Care.

I hope that Trump is out of office before 2020, by Impeachment or Removal through the 25th Amendment. Barring that, hopefully someone like Kasich will knock Trump out in a Primary, and then we will have a real choice between a sane Republican and a good Democrat. Then our National Nightmare would be over.

Tear their base apart and get rid of him any way we can.

Then after the primary we ALL vote dem.

27. Kasich is a candidate we will not win against.

He was the one I feared most in the publican primary. I would not dream of promoting him as a candidate. I cannot imagine why any Dem would.

30. I Think He Is Defeatable

Like anyone else. My point is to undercut Trump if he runs for re-election with a Primary Challenger. I think a good Democratic Candidate could take on anyone on the Republican bench, including Kasich.

34. I heard that a lot from other Dems when I considered crossing over and voting for him in the primary

They thought he would be harder to beat than Trump. That didn't work out so well. We got the bat-shit crazy, grifter, know-nothing anyway. I would much rather have the R nominee be someone like Kasich than Trump or Pence.

For the record - Kasich is better than most Rs on healthcare and that is about the only thing good I can think to say about him as Governor.

He is not a Russian tool like Trump. Knowing how things turned out I'd much rather have him than Trump, but I think Hillary could have beat him.

39. What About?

What about his inherent mental stability? I do not know Kasich as well as you Folks from Ohio, but he seems to be sane. That is the worst thing about Trump, in my opinion. He is really insane and dangerous, and all his negative policies flow from this madness.

Kasich seems to not be mad/insane. He is just a right-winger, which I oppose, but at least he is not a crazy right-winger. He is simply wrong on most issues, but is not unreasonable or mad.

As someone who knows Kasich better than myself, would you agree or disagree? Is Kasich stable? He seems sane me from what I have seen of him. Just wrong on most policies and positions, seemingly excluding some health care stuff.

Thanks for the clear-headed post. I am not promoting the Republicans. I am hoping for disunity amongst them and a Primary Challenge. I am looking forward to a Democratic President in 2020.

25. Those Of Us In Ohio Can Tell You That You Want No Part Of K-Suck

Immediately upon taking office in Ohio, he started pushing through all kinds of disastrous Right-Wing bullshit. Remember Scott Walker's union-busting bill he passed in Wisconsin? Kasich put through the exact same bill in Ohio, but he got his ass handed to him when the people of Ohio voted it down on referendum. He also fully supports the old Bush agenda, privatization of everything, charter schools, trickle-down economics, the whole thing.

And while he might seem like a breath of fresh air when compared to Trump, believe me, he's no picnic. We Ohio voters have had to fight his disastrous agenda at pretty much every turn. Calling Kasich a moderate Republican is sort of like calling Moe the smart stooge.

32. I Appreciate Your Insight

since you are someone from Ohio and are familiar with Kasich. Part of the reason I put forward the idea of a Primary Challenger is that I hate Trump so much, even a bad Republican seems like a marginally better option than Trump. But really what I would like is to see the Republicans fight amongst themselves in a Primary, so that whoever they put forward for the Presidency has already gotten beaten up.

A Primary challenge will also drain money and resources away from Trump so that he will have less to use by the time he gets to the General Election. If Trump runs again, remember he will be running as an incumbent, and we need to use every tactic and trick to cut him down, including the idea of seeing him challenged in a Primary. It is a sign of a candidate's weakness when an incumbent is challenged by someone from within their own Party.

Similar thing happened in the 1980 Presidential campaign when Ted Kennedy challenged a sitting Democratic President, Jimmy Carter, from within the Party. It helped hobble Carter before the general election, and contributed to his loss to Reagan. I would like to see something similar happen to the Republicans in 2020. Kasich may be odious, but we can use him as a weapon against Trump and the Republicans.

36. I See Your Point, And I Agree

For tactical purposes, it makes sense. And K-Suck is definitely better than Trump, but it's like hitting yourself in the head with a slightly smaller hammer.

I guess I'm not really thinking about 2020 because the idea that Trump will STILL be in office by then makes my head implode. I'm 100% confident he's going to be impeached before then, and I'm laser-focused on 2018 in order to make it happen.

37. Yes

I also hope that Trump gets impeached before then or removed under the 25th Amendment. I am looking forward to 2018 though as well.

I think there will be some relief for us Dems if Trump and the Republicans get beaten (and badly) during the mid-terms. 2018 is not too far to go, and it gets us half-way to 2020.

So, we just need to keep hanging on. I know it is tough, but we all need to be tenacious and keep fighting. Oppose, Resist, Impeach!

3. he already ran against trump in a primary and lost. And kasich is a conservative

The only reason he is seen as moderate is because of how fucked up that party has become.

But he did win his own state agsinst trump and win there unlike some others like rubio.

He also didn't vote for trump in the ge.

If kasich was the nominee he would be asks to run against the dem without trump baggage and the media that propped trump will do the same for kasich.

6. He would lose.

The Republican base loves Trump. That's why the Republicans are refusing to investigate or impeach him.

I also agree with the others who said that Kasich is a right-wing nutcase. He may be less of a nutcase than Trump, but that does not make him "sane".

16. I Disagree That Kasich Would Win The Presidency

He might win, but I would prefer him as an opponent to Trump. If Kasich won the Republican Primary, there is no guarantee that he would win the Presidency, which is the point.

Part of my argument is that I would rather risk losing to Kasich more than I would risk losing to Trump. My hope and expectation is for a Democratic victory in 2020.

I do not agree with Kasich's policies and politics, but Trump is off the rails crazy. My hope is that we will elect a Democrat to the White House in 2020. But it is not guaranteed and I would rather risk losing to Kasich than Trump. But Democratic Victory is the Goal.

My goal is to undermine Trump with a Primary Challenger and then to see a Democrat elected to the White House in 2020. I want the Republicans to lose. I think seeing a Primary Challenge to Trump would help our case, and would undermine Trump. That is my intent with this Thread: to undermine the Republicans and see a Democratic Victory.

31. Republican Disunity

I think promoting Republican disunity is a way to promote the Democratic Party. I want to see Trump challenged in a Primary from someone in the Republican Party, thus my point about Kasich. I would like to see Republicans tear each other up in a Primary so that their candidate, whoever that might be, is already bloody before the General Election. It is a tactic intended to strengthen the Democrat's hand in 2020.

I want whoever is the Democratic Candidate to win. I would just rather see a more stable Republican opponent. Practically anyone would be better than Trump. So, I do not want to see Kasich as President, but I would rather risk losing to him than see another Term for Trump. And if Kasich were the Republican nominee, I am confidant that he would be defeated by a Democrat.

15. My Question

My question is simple: who would you rather run against? Kasich or Trump? And why?

I would rather run against Kasich, because I would rather risk losing to him than risk losing to Trump, who is off the rails crazy and dangerous.

Also, I think it would be a better campaign season than running against Trump. Trump and most of his followers are impervious to reason. I do not agree with Kasich on policy, but his tone and temperament are not crazy and belligerent like Trump's.

41. Maybe

A core of Republicans love Trump right now, but it is highly probable that prior to 2020 Trump will fail to keep many of his promises to his base, and he might implode and alienate them.

I should note that even if Kasich or other Republicans run in a Primary Campaign and do not win, it would still help undercut Trump in the General Election. It is a sign of weakness for an Incumbent President to be challenged in a Primary in his own Party.

By 2020 Kasich could build a coalition of moderate Republicans plus those Trump Followers who regret voting for Trump, and there are some who have buyer's remorse right now.

Again, Kasich does not need to win to undercut Trump and force Trump to spend money, time, and resources in a Primary fight. A Primary would show Trump as weak anyway.
