When Republicans say nobody should pay for someone else's health care...

They show a fundamental misunderstanding of what health insurance is, and what it's basic reason for existing is.

So, abolish health insurance altogether then. Is that the idea?

Basically, yes. Only buy fire insurance if you expect to have a fire. Xipe Totec May 2017 #7

Of course, I'd suggest the government simply pay all doctor salaries, supplement schooling, and all the other fun stuff as a whole, at which point there is no need for insurance, but I'm relative sure they aren't interested in that approach.

it was first proposed by the Heritage Foundation. Tweaked to become RomneyCare in Massachusetts. Further tweaked to become Obamacare.

Of course that's sort of their stock in trade. But whenever their supporters can be persuaded that they're paying out something for someone else, they start slavering like Pavlov's dogs after the bell rings.

Anyone who thinks their premium payments to an insurance company are not used to pay for someone else's healthcare needs is an imbecile.

It's no different than any other insurance. If you are accident-free this month, the premium you paid for your car insurance is used to pay for someone else's car accident. If you didn't have a home fire this month, your home insurance premium was used to compensate someone who DID have a fire.

This is beyond fundamental - it's common sense. If you put in an insurance claim to cover the expenses of your appendectomy, you are NOT just getting back the amount of the premiums you've paid in so far - you are getting paid from what's "in the pot" that has been contributed to by all of the people who DIDN'T need an appendectomy.

Jesus Hussein Christ. I realize that Republicans are far from the smartest people on the planet - but shouldn't plain old common sense enter into the picture at least once in a while?

I can't remember which Senator it was, but one of them, after Katrina wiped his house off the face of the earth, smiled and said, "It's o.k., my flood insurance will cover it." Coastal flood insurance is provided by the government, if I recall John Stoessel's report correctly.
