'Frat boys and sorrority girls' - check in

I'm glad the frat boys thread died a natural death.
Don't ask, and no, I won't link to it.
I'll just opine that it unfairly damned anyone who had ever belong to a Greek letter organization in college.

But it made me curious.
How many of us are there here?
Who are willing to admit it.

Does it matter?
Not a whit.

As I said, just idle curiosity.

Me: Delta Kappa Epsilon, University of Alabama, class of '63.
Roll tide.
For me, it was a phase.
I pretty much left it behind when I left college.
Much of it seems pretty juvenile now.
I did enjoy the parties and social life and it was a pretty good bunch of guys to hang out with.

I don't really have any close friends from that time now.
As I said, it was a phase.
I don't regret it.

You?

Not a fraternity as one would find in most colleges, but a brotherhood like few others.
A little bit of sleuthing and you'll have the story.

The one and only reason my parents let me go to college was to find a husband. That was never my intention and I did not find one or even look for one while there. I wanted a degree but I "got to go" with their help. I was a music major and you know what kind of non-husband material that put me in close contact with. It was disgusting to me but I had to pledge a sorority they said, to get to the places where I would be most likely to find so called husband material. I actually enjoyed some of it and we did have a good time but as a music major I was only at the house to sleep and eat so did not get the full experience.

Yes, the 70's. I missed having to wear white gloves on campus by one year. We were quite behind the times then but we caught up very quickly when those of us from the HS class of 71 and mary jane entered the scene. Gloves you say? Hmmmmmm, uh NOPE!

Would that I had got around to catching a Dead show there. They played some epic ones at that spot.

It was kind of like the most uptight, conventional, conformist and lame kids who went that route.

Not passing judgment, of course.

We had a lot of traditional social fraternity trappings.... ceremonies, pledging, bigs and littles, LOTS of parties, but our efforts were focused mainly on service projects. We were not associated with the campus greek system.

Alpha Sigma Alpha. We weren't hardcore, it was just a fun thing. Had good times, great memories. I still have friends from my sorority. Greeks on my campus were really no different than any other group of twenty year olds. This was the late '70s.

I went to a college in the middle of nowhere. Greek life was the only social life. I had a good time there, but I never took it too seriously.

Greek life back when I was a college student was not well regarded. My daughter decided to go across country for college, and I saw some merit to the idea of her rushing when she decided to do it. When she was that far from home, her having that extra network made sense to me. She went AGD and I have been completely blown away by their focus (and actual pride!) on having the highest GPA on campus. This is a huge deal to them. They also mandate participation in philanthropic activities out in the community. I've been struck by the polish and poise these girls are carrying around too.

Yeah, they drink and party, and there is that "girl drama" stuff, but there really have been a lot of positives for her that I really didn't anticipate. I do believe it has contributed positively to her college experience and her life outlook.

Times have changed, I think.
