(28,485 posts)foreign languages starting at a very early age. In this country, foreign language instruction rarely begins before high school. So Americans, even those who actually care about learning other languages, just don't have the opportunity to gain much fluency. It doesn't help that the vast majority of Americans live thousands of miles from a country where the primary language isn't English. In Europe, you don't have to travel very far to be somewhere that they don't speak your first language.
Of course, it doesn't help that Trump's English proficiency is startlingly limited.
