1. I don't believe this excuse for a second

I think Trump wanted Michael Flynn precisely BECAUSE of his Russian ties. Just like he wanted Tillerson and Manafort because of their Russian ties. Maybe Trump thought that a 3 star general would be useful working with Russia for a coordinated US-Russian military alliance in Syria. Maybe Trump's venal corrupt little mind recognized a kindred spirit, who grubbed after Russian money.
