President Obama, in keeping with tradition, has resisted the no doubt overwhelming urge to blast his incompetent successor. He has taken some oblique shots at Trump, like when he said the Affordable Care Act is more popular than the current president. Outside of subtle jabs though, he has remained relatively silent on the man who stands opposed to all the values he holds dear.
It seems Obama is slowly moving towards more active resistance to Trumps disastrous policies. Today, at a food innovation summit in Milan, without making explicit reference to Donald Trump, Obama urged global citizens to action:
People have a tendency to blame politicians when things dont work, but as I always tell people, you get the politicians you deserve. And if you dont vote and you dont pay attention, youll get policies that dont reflect your interest.

(12,621 posts)has no current privileged information and can discuss anything not revealed to him under his former security clearance just like we are doing now with our public knowledge. His reticence is due to good judgment and a sense of what is appropriate to a former President of the US, IMHO.

(46,166 posts)All the factors added up to a Trump presidency.
Voter suppression + voter apathy + Comey = Trump

(10,611 posts)If we'd had France's voter turnout - which they consider low this cycle - the shift of fence-sitters who were swayed by Comey wouldn't have been a determining factor.
The margins in WI, PA and MI would not have held for Trump.

(46,166 posts)But the day Comey was announced as Obama's choice I got a sense of dread. That position should have gone to a loyal Dem. Reaching across the aisle was bullshit from the start. Good people can make bad decisions and this was one of O's bad decisions, imo.

(109 posts)I also blame the fake news sites. I think they had some impact. I saw a lot of friends posting fake and outrageous news on Facebook. I no longer see that. People are also vey tribal. I also blame the Evangelicals. I have always said they would vote for Adolph Hitler if he professed to be pro-life.

(81,220 posts)He IS right. Regardless of the Russians, the Comey mess (which seems to be increasing instead of fading away), the Bible-thumpers, the Pox Noise crowd, hate radio, and our lovely friends behind Guccifer&Co, the bros, and the bots. REGARDLESS of all that - if our side doesn't bother to vote, WE LOSE.
And it's doubly tragic because there are MORE of US! WE outnumber the bad guys! There are MORE of US! There shouldn't even be a question or doubt. We lose it because our laziness, negligence, and/or apathy all contribute to more of us staying home on Election Day!
So President Obama is correct. It's US. It's all US. And it's up to US.

(37,648 posts)My brother doesn't vote because if he registers, he'll be called for jury duty. A lot of people do that, I think.
He's retired, so it would be no problem for him to serve on a jury. But it's a bother.
I've served on juries a few times. I view it as my civic duty and don't have a problem with it. It's inconvenient and a hassle. But if not me, then who? Some bozo who doesn't even understand what the lawyers are saying? Some extremist with an axe to grind?

(5,818 posts)It is almost always a vague term used to make excuses or to place blame. If it was all up to the voters, then a campaign wouldn't be necessary; a candidate need only put up a website for voters to access and make their decisions.

(2,595 posts)He didn't also add the known fact that some people would rather vote against their own economic and social self-interests in order to support their own misogyny, racism, anti-intellectualism and xenophobia. If there's a handy minority regardless of how educated and how much they contribute to the country or their community, there are always demagogues that will exploit that. The majority of the elite will always vote in favor of their own elitist economic self-interest and there are those who will vote for justice and economic egalitarianism for the whole, but there are those, many of whom are poorly educated and lack intellectual curiosity or just have told to fear it, in depressed and economically challenged areas of the country, who can be - as they were in this past so-called election cycle - manipulated by evil (and I don't use that term loosely) people like tRump and their ilk to vote against their own collective interests in favor of pushing down minorities and "others" by telling those gullible voters that these "others" are solely and exclusively to blame for all their problems. It worked for Hitler and it worked with tRump, and it will continue to work until those voters can identify and draw a bulls eye on the guy who made their lives worse than where they started and they've felt the crushing burden of that disaster.

(217 posts)1. Did not push single payer
2. Appointed milquetoast AG's who did not prosecute voter suppression
3. Appointed a republican FBI Chief
4. Did not campaign much in 2016
5. To me seemed more concerned about himself than what was going on
6. Meekly accepted the republican obstruction of the Supreme Court pick
7. Thought compromise with the republicans was the best approach
Now he blames the voters, when in actuality, the voters were disappointed in him.

(757 posts)people working 2 jobs or more, $7.25 and hour, with families, and children in school, they often can't "pay attention." What we should expect is that our representatives actually do represent us and respond to our concerns and not hug us and then vote to let us die.
Being able to vote should be made easier, not harder, Obama (and I love Obama) did not champion voting rights, so thanks Obama.
