(115,661 posts)It was about the worst thing he could have done, and it made him look guiltier than ever. Remember, one of the crimes the Nixon administration officials were charged with was obstruction of justice, and Nixon himself was named by the grand jury as an "unindicted co-conspirator." He couldn't be charged with a crime as a sitting president, but he sure as hell was about to be impeached. Likewise, I think firing Comey on such flimsy grounds was a very bad move on Trump's part and it will eventually bite him on the ass.

(115,661 posts)is investigating his connections to and possible collusion with Russia. It's looking very Nixonian. Here's an excerpt from the WaPo story that came out the day after the Saturday Night Massacre:
In announcing the plan Friday night, the President ordered Cox to make no further effort to obtain tapes or other presidential documents.
Cox responded that he could not comply with the President's instructions and elaborated on his refusal and vowed to pursue the tape recordings at a televised news conference yesterday.
That set in motion the chain of events that resulted in the departure of Cox and the two top officials of the Justice Department and immediately raised prospects that the President himself might be impeached or forced to resign.
