Trump and company know that they have been caught red handed, and unless an investigation is quashed, they know they will be toast. Thus you see Trump making a move that makes him look even more guilty than his earlier moves, and that is saying a lot. The only reason he would take such an action that makes him look guilty as hell is that he has no alternative other than being nailed as a criminal. He knows he has nothing to lose, so why not?

This is his hail Mary effort to avoid impeachment, jail, and total ruination. Either the investigation is quashed, or he is a goner.

It's a big old distraction, and a petty revenge, and convenient... (and a massive mistake and admission of guilt, but truly, people like him aren't nearly as good at Machiavelli as they think they are).
